Can't Create Partitions

I have a laptop with 3 primary partitions and 1 extended partition.

I want to install linux in extended partition.

But when I custom create partitions, it says : "Couldn't allocate requested partitions, not enough free space on the disk"

I can't even create Physical Volume.

I can't remove the primary partitions, as those are for recovery and windows os.

Here's the screenshot.

Re: Can't Create Partitions

With standard MBR partitioning scheme you're only allowed to have a maximum of three primary partitions and one extended partition. Your extended partition is too small and the unallocated space is wasted, because you can't create any new partitions (neither primary nor extended).

Try to backup your files from your D: drive and then create an new extended partition or try to expand the extended partition (not the logical D: partition) till the end of the drive. Then you should be able to create as many logical partitions as you want.

Many linux live CD (inc Fedora) have gparted available which will help you expand your extended partition simply enough - plug your laptop into the power 1st though! Your battery is running out - which does not mix well with partitioning tools

Re: Can't Create Partitions

Yes, GParted from a live CD should let you expand the extended partition containing D: without damaging D: itself, and allow you to create more logical partitions after D:. (Logical partitions are stored inside one extended partition, itself a type of primary partition. You can only have up to four primaries, one of which may be extended. Unfortunately the way that Windows allocates "drive" letters makes this less straightforward to present in a Windows partitioning tool.)

george_toolan is right that it's always a good idea to back-up potentially effected file-systems before messing with partitioning though, but as long as you don't resize D: itself, it should be fairly safe.
