Unhappy Ubuntu 12.10 (and Fedora 17) x64 on Compaq Presario CQ56 boot fail

(postet although on: h**p://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2077516
and
h**p://fedoraforum.de/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=22962 )
English version below.

Hallo,

Mittels
xforcevesa acpi=off nomodeset
sieht man wenigstens etwas.

=====================

Hello,

I become desperate. I can't start many Linux distributions round about kernel greater 3.4.x.

Currently there run a Fedora 16 x64 system (3.4.11). An upgrade (preupgrade) to Fedora 17 (Linux 3.3.4) Fail (black screen), a directly installation fail (black screen). And now I try Ubuntu 12.10 and I'll get a black screen although.

But there is a little hope, I'll get something in the console with parameters:
xforcevesa acpi=off nomodeset

I'll try to log in via ssh in my local LAN, but I get a "No route to host"

PS: CD/DVD is correct (checked twice), same game on USB Stick.

Thank you for any help!

Re: Ubuntu 12.10 (and Fedora 17) x64 on Compaq Presario CQ56 boot fail

I have installed Ubuntu on a HDD with another Laptop. GRUB works. A short time after start the system hangs. I'm wondering, there's no file in /var/log. I have deleted all old logs before. It should not be so hard to trace where the system hangs? Earliver versions run perfectly!

Are parameter available for GRUB to deactivate log buffering? I think the cache could be the reason why I see no file.

I can also check other distributions if you want (earlier dates).

I'm having the same problem with Ubuntu. In my experience with it, it works on some machines, and others it does not. Just the way Ubuntu is...[sigh] Another good reason to stick with either Fedora and/or openSuSE.

Hello and thanks for your reply.

But it also doesn't work with fedora. I think it could be a kernel problem and isn't distribution specific.

Okay, try downloading CentOS and Debian and try dual-booting them. If it is a kernel issue, you may have better luck with an older kernel. And if it is successful, you should be able to use them just like you would Fedora and Ubuntu. Just be aware that being more stable in this case will give you older kernal, desktop environment, etc.

Fedora 15 and 16 works on this machine over one year without any problems (only the wlan is horrible). But f15 and f16 are affected with some bugs that are fixed in f17 and i need them

It is not about the mere use, it must be possible to find the error. This couldn't be rocket science!

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS works fine. But I will catch the bug...

Re: Ubuntu 12.10 (and Fedora 17) x64 on Compaq Presario CQ56 boot fail

You could do a kernel DOWNGRADE on the fedora machine, using yum.
You could even be specific wich (lower & for you working) kernel you want to have installed.
After, boot into old kernel and uninstall the new (bugy) kernel and rebuild grub.cfg

Code:
sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
To continue without fear of another kernel update, you could use this (save as script):
Code:
#!/bin/bash
sudo yum upgrade -y --exclude=kernel*
Wait until F18 hits stable, and then try again.

Hope this helps
