Question Installing some apps/games from Yum Extender takes time.

Hi I am a fedora 17 newbie and a complete fan now. In fact, I totally got rid of Windows in my ASUS k42dy laptop. I noticed that fedora has it's own software center (just like ubuntu) and Yum Extender (I believe it's like Ubuntu's synaptic package manager). I am trying to install some games/apps let's say Open Arena, Frozen Bubble and etc. I noticed that installing this apps via YumExender takes a lot of time considering that I have a 10MB internet connection. I can say this because I tried installing the same apps back when I was in Ubuntu and I can say that the speed is different (the latter being faster). Is there a way to improve this? Does Fedora and Ubuntu use a different source? And lastly, is it possible to install apps/games by downloading them on their site, if yes, how?

Re: Installing some apps/games from Yum Extender takes time.

Did you notice that you have to agree to download the files with yumex?

There's a yum plugin to search for the fastest mirror:
Code:
sudo yum install yum-plugin-fastestmirror
Maybe it gets a bit speed up with that.

Take the note, a 10 mbit connection brings you a top download speed of 1,25 mbyte per second.

Re: Installing some apps/games from Yum Extender takes time.

Searching google for "yum slow download" brought this as first result:
http://fedorasolved.org/Members/zcat/yum-rpm-faq/ :: See #1

Allthough i have yumex installed as well, i rarley use it, as i prefer the command line...
/* EDIT:
I have made up a page with some basic yum commands:
http://sea.hostingsociety.com/?p=Art...sheet-Yum.html
*/

Using yum -C args will force yum to retrieve package info only from cache, which will speed up the process by a little. This will not work if you have cleaned the cache previously!

Re: Installing some apps/games from Yum Extender takes time.

Some mirrors are sometimes very slow.
I haven't found yet how to solve this except by cancelling and trying again in the hope yum will find another mirror.

The fastest mirror plugin ain't good because it sticks with the closest mirror and frequently that's the one with issues.
