F12 to F12 or Win 7/XP to F12 remote desktop connection

Hi all,

Title pretty much explains what I want to do. I have F12 dual booted on both my laptop and desktop. Laptop is 64-bit F12, desktop is 32-bit. I'm trying to test my remote desktop settings between the two, just to see if it works, but it won't let me connect.

The F12 to F12 is just for testing purposes, because I eventually hope to connect TO fedora, FROM windows, or vice versa, in order to synchronize files between laptop/desktop.

What I want to hopefully accomplish is:
1) Connect between Fedora on my desktop and laptop
2) Connect from WinXP to Fedora, or from Win 7 to Fedora.

I've searched on the forums but most of the posts are outdated and involve Fedora CORE builds, not anything recent. Google has turned up some results and I will try to read them over the next few days, but I thought I'd go ahead and post just for good measure.

Should be noted that they are both regular, default Fedora installs. Some updates and stuff have been done, but nothing extensive.

If any further details are needed, please let me know.

My primary concern is synchronizing files, since I am a college student and I use my laptop often, but I find myself leaving files on one computer or another..and I might not always remember to bring a flash drive, or other physical media with me. If there are any other suggestions for this, please let me know.

Thanks for any help,
OpethFan89

*EDIT* I should also mention that both computers, for the time being, are on the same home network, same router, everything. Desktop is connected with an ethernet cable to the wireless router, but can do wireless if needed, and laptop is of course wireless. I have not done any port forwarding as of yet, on either the router or the modem itself. Router is a D-Link DI-624 wireless router, modem is a Westell 6100 DSL modem. If any further network settings are needed, please let me know.

You can work on only one system with eg vnc.
If you use mainly textfiles you can use svn. It also handles binaries but text files are better.
Also this tool may help you: http://jfilesync.sourceforge.net/

Are you able to expand on this a bit further? I haven't used VNC or any remote connection utility on any OS in the past so I'm not sure what steps I need to take.
