If I am reading your Xorg.0.log correctly, the system does boot but it can't start the graphical desktop (i.e. the graphical login screen).

So after the plymouth boot splash finishes (i.e. the moving bar stops moving), and there is no more I/O activity, try pressing Alt+Ctrl+F2, see if it takes you to a virtual terminal or not (sorry, if you've already tried that)

Thank you! I finally got it removed! I then followed bbb13's other instructions and the final step failed. Terminal said the following:

Install kernel-devel then try again.

Re: Fedora 20 hangs on ever boot attempt

Got it! I know have the proprietary drivers installed and working properly. Unfortunately, the I had to force restart because it froze shortly afterword. Upon rebooting, I checked for updates with yum and got the following message:

One of the configured repositories failed (Unknown),
and yum doesn't have enough cached data to continue. At this point the only
safe thing yum can do is fail. There are a few ways to work "fix" this:

1. Contact the upstream for the repository and get them to fix the problem.

2. Reconfigure the baseurl/etc. for the repository, to point to a working
upstream. This is most often useful if you are using a newer
distribution release than is supported by the repository (and the
packages for the previous distribution release still work).

3. Disable the repository, so yum won't use it by default. Yum will then
just ignore the repository until you permanently enable it again or use
--enablerepo for temporary usage:

yum-config-manager --disable <repoid>

4. Configure the failing repository to be skipped, if it is unavailable.
Note that yum will try to contact the repo. when it runs most commands,
so will have to try and fail each time (and thus. yum will be be much
slower). If it is a very temporary problem though, this is often a nice
compromise:

yum-config-manager --save --setopt=<repoid>.skip_if_unavailable=true

database disk image is malformed

This sounds like data corruption may have occured. Should I reinstall the operating system again or is there an easy way to fix rather than just disabling what might be key repos?

PS This is ridiculous. I've lost count of how many times I've installed Linux. I do it at least once every 6 months. This is by far the most trouble I've ever had.

Re: Fedora 20 hangs on ever boot attempt

For the "database disk image is malformed" error, try running:
yum clean all

As for the failed, repo, it doesn't say which repo failed, could you post the whole yum output somewhere?

Re: Fedora 20 hangs on ever boot attempt

I'm also finding that rainbow colored artifacts will appear on the screen randomly since the proprietary drivers were installed and cause the system to freeze until I reboot. Is this a lost cause?

It's still going, but I thought I'd post it real quick before my computer freezes again.

Re: Fedora 20 hangs on ever boot attempt

use the fedora cd/usb you used to install it and go to rescue mode. after that you can chroot your current fedora installation and do the steps above. if you don't know how to do that, let me know so i can guide you. but remember to do it all from the begining and do install kernel-devel before you do anything.

P.S. also make sure your ethernet cable is plugged in, don't use wifi. just to be sure

Re: Fedora 20 hangs on ever boot attempt

I am also experiencing some boot problems. The boot process stops at
"Started Cyptography Setup for luks- . . . ." (luks volume information deleted)

I usually see the Fedora symbol freeze. I then hit "Esc" to get to the screen and see the last thing posted is the message listed above. It does nothing until I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, at which point more text appears, but too fast for me to see. The system will reboot and most of the time, the boot process will then finish. Sometimes it stops at the same point again.

System is AMD Phenom X4 running Fedora 20 x86_64 with all updates.

1. What is happening to cause this?
2. How can I fix it so that it does not do this but boots/reboots properly all the time?

have you by accident encrypted your / partition on fedora install? the only reason i can possibly imagine for fedora to autostart luks is that..

Re: Fedora 20 hangs on ever boot attempt

It was not by accident. I did it on purpose. It is not something that caused problems before Fedora 19, when I first noticed it on occasion. It is occurring more frequently now with Fedora 20. The first attempt after reboot stops. A second reboot succeeds.

The value of making sure any temp files are also encrypted outweigh the inconvenience of having to reboot on occasion. However, this is something that should not happen. It should work fine with only /boot unencrypted. After all, it used to not have problems with that setup.

I'm wondering if having /boot and / on an SSD and /home and swap on a separate HDD might have anything to do with this problem. I don't see why it should, but I can't rule that out.
