Question SCSI error on write(0,16): [3 73 03] Power calibration area error

I just burned 2 audio CDs. Then i downloaded F12 to install it on a few laptops i got, and now i'm getting this message when trying to burn the iso to DVD. I tried 2 different DVDs, and i also tried updating and rebooting. I also tried with 2 different programs (Gnomebaker and Brasero). I still get the error. Any ideas?

Code:
SCSI error on write(0,16): [3 73 03] Power calibration area error
Code:
sr 8:0:1:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
sr 8:0:1:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
sr 8:0:1:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Illegal mode for this track
sr 8:0:1:0: [sr0] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0
sr 8:0:1:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
sr 8:0:1:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
sr 8:0:1:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Illegal mode for this track
sr 8:0:1:0: [sr0] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0
cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!
Thanks.

What type of disc are you using?
HAL says there you can't use DVD-RAM media and DVD +RW Double layer.

The same DVD-Rs that i've always used to burn ISOs... Hmm, maybe this is a temporary software bug.

Re: SCSI error on write(0,16): [3 73 03] Power calibration area error

If you know your optical unit is capable of handling DVD +RW DL then it might be HAL or UDEV identifying the unit wrong, or UDEV added a UFI(is that right?) file with some new specs or your DRIVER have problems.

If you are not using a DVD +RW DL and it is not recording the problem may be with the wodim or cdrtools.

Thanks for your help!

Not looking good it appears that is the optical unit sending those messages and that maybe a hardware problem.

One solved that problem updating his firmware.

I think one can infer with some degree of certainty that your problem is hardware related probably.

What I would try:

- Cleaning the lens with some kit.
- Testing the unit in another computer(a friend maybe)
- Testing the connectors(pluging out making a visual inspection to see if there is anything blocking, damaged or dirty and plugin in again)
- Testing another cable.
- Testing the power unit to see if it is sending the energy necessary or if it is time to change the PSU(Power System Unit), if the optical unit works in another computer.

Re: SCSI error on write(0,16): [3 73 03] Power calibration area error

Code:
[^v^]$ wodim --devices
wodim: Overview of accessible drives (1 found) :
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
 0 dev='/dev/scd0'	rwrw-- : 'SONY' 'DVD RW AW-Q170A'
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
[^v^]$
Eh, it was 30$, i'll just get another one. But i appreciate you clarifying where the issue lies. Now i know to get one while i'm out .

Thanx!

Oh, lol, i don't have another computer, or any friends, so i'll just buy another one. If it doesn't work, then i'll assume it's the power supply....

Could also be the cable or your connectors on the motherboard.

Worth checking those first

Re: SCSI error on write(0,16): [3 73 03] Power calibration area error

Ok, i actually have some extra cables, so i'll try that tomorrow.

Hey, do you think it might be a good idea to open the DVD door/tray and spray duster inside it?

Thanks.

Air you mean?

For me is such a small space I think the dust will just float back to the lens, if you are talking about a cleaning solutions that may have other consequences like pudding on the top of the lens and drying or pudding somewhere else where it can impede other mechanical components from working, so I don't think that is a good idea.

Oh, ok. That makes sense. Ok, so, cd lens cleaner, then cable check. If that doesn't fix it, replace the drive. If that doesn't do it, then it is the motherboard or the power supply. Got it.

Thanx!

Re: SCSI error on write(0,16): [3 73 03] Power calibration area error

Update: i bought a new dvd/rw drive, but mistakenly forgot to buy the sata cable for it, and realized that i don't have an extra sata cable on me, so i put the other one back in, and it works.

Re: SCSI error on write(0,16): [3 73 03] Power calibration area error

Well I found some nice thinks I have the same problem with s Sony DVD with the same firmware, I was using Brassero and Nero Linux with the same message, about the SCSI error on write(0,16): [3 73 03] Power calibration area error, so I was doing some research and found several threads about this problem, no clue, so I updated the firmware for the DVD device and some times works sometimes not, so I decided to use Xfburn to check, and I discover that when I tried to setup the burn speed to 4,6,8x and the same message, but when I selected the auto mode issue is gray out. the internal buffer not goes over 96%. and the .iso image burning process goes fine with other formats like DAO same and the same using Nero and Brassero,
