Firefox vs Firefox?

My question basically pertains to running firefox from the repo vs running it from /opt. What I usually do is download firefox from mozilla ftp, extract, move to /opt, set symlink to plugins, and then edit /usr/shar/applications/firefox.destop, then save with new name. Once everything is working properly I delete fedoras firefox and go from there.

The big question is how is this as far as security goes. I know that my firefox install will update accordingly, but is it as safe as fireox in repos?

Re: Firefox vs Firefox?

As far as I can tell, none of the Fedora patches to Firefox are security related. They all deal with preferences and integration.

So, I would say upstream Firefox is just as secure if not more since you'll see updates quicker than you would otherwise.

Re: Firefox vs Firefox?

I've noticed that the tar ball style Firefox's from mozilla looks a little wrong on the KDE desktop or else it responds a bit slower to mouse and keyboard events than the rpm from Fedora.

It might be interesting to run about:buildconfig in the mozilla tar style Firefox and do the same with the Fedora rpm, maybe there's some different optimizations.
