Arrow rtl8192ce troubleshooting and other queries

Hi Folks, I am using a Fedora 17 system along with Win7 on a ASUS laptop. The wireless card is RTL 8188CE.

Now I have been facing several issues with the wireless connection:
- Slow speeds as compared to Win7
- At times cannot simply connect to an AP simply because authentication keeps on failing
(And most of the day I'm at my laptop either at home or at work, connected to WIFI, and this is the most frustrating thing)
- The connection is still established but the pages are not found.

Each time I update my system, during which a newer kernel is installed, I manually make the driver and install it on my system.

Brings me to my first question, Is it necessary to make the driver each time a new kernel version is installed? And is this the right way, or should I first blacklist the kernel driver?

Secondly, how do I troubleshoot my wifi connection? One of the commands I know is this:
Code:
[parths@parth ~]$ iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"421bbakerstreet"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:1D:D0:E8:32:C0
          Bit Rate=65 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr=2347 B Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=70/70 Signal level=10 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:17 Missed beacon:0
Is the Invalid misc count the problem?

Re: Wireless card queries

So here's what I did:

Got the driver name using the
Code:
 lspci -v
command. In my case rtl8192ce

Then,

Code:
modprobe -r rtl8192ce
which removed the existing driver and then used
Code:
make
and
Code:
make install
(requires su - ) to install the downloaded driver.

Right now the performance is at par, will keep it in check for a few days...

This post was what I stumbled upon
