Red face Nvidia Video F17 3.6.8-2 akmod fails--Solved

Successfully running F17 3.6.7-4 on x86_64 machine; akmod installed long ago to handle nvidia video driver

Asked to update to F17 3.6.8-2; do so, then it hangs during boot to the new system.

/var/log shows that X11 cannot find the nvidia modules, although they are sitting right there where they were before. And the dracut log shows that the nvidia modules were loaded.

Used grub to boot to the previous version.

Had this same problem with some versions of F16. Had to do the same thing.

See second reply for the solution.

Re: Nvidia Video F17 3.6.8-2 akmod fails

Try

Code:
yum install kmod-nvidia
rpmfusion has the compiled driver for kernel 3.6.8-2 and even 3.6.9-2

Wink Re: Nvidia Video F17 3.6.8-2 akmod fails: SOLVED

Thanks for the suggestion. It did work, but for someone who knows less than me, there are a few steps to mention.

When it boots into 3.6.8-2, the graphical window hangs. You have to then hit Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get a single-user window to appear. Log in as root, and run "yum install kmod-nvidia".

It is a bit of a nuisance to have to get to a single user window (Ctrl-Alt-F3 would work just as well; Ctrl-Alt-F7 is the graphical window that won't work until you do the kmod).

As noted in my original posting, not all upgrades of the system produce this problem, but somem of them do. Now we have the cure.
