Trouble upgrading to FC12 due to conflicts and dependency problems

No idea. If it were me if you cannot even get a root shell I'd just reinstall fc12.

Well, I found the problem- I was using Fedora. I switched to Ubuntu server. It makes me sad to say this. I didn't get a chance to try your startup option. It seems like every time I upgrade the OS it takes more and more effort whereas I expect it to get easier. And hey- I was setting the SELinux to permissive anyways so I wasn't making use of the security features. Maybe I'll be back... someday. Thanks for your continued efforts helping me.

well, Ubuntu will currently be using an older kernel. If my guess happened to be right and it's a change in a recent kernel, you'll hit it with Ubuntu too, in the end. So keep a note somewhere. =)

I just ran into this problem. I can't explain it, but I have a solution. abrt deps were messed up severely and it makes no sense as I have no abrt* or dependent rpm installed on the system!

Add the following line to the first stanza of these 2 files:
/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo
/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo

exclude=abrt abrt-gui abrt-addon-ccpp abrt-plugin-logger abrt-desktop abrt-addon-kerneloops abrt-plugin-bugzilla abrt-addon-python abrt-plugin-runapp

Then the yum upgrade will proceed. If you get other packages complaining, try excluding them (and the pkg that is dep'd on them) too.
