Exclamation My fan is going crazy!

It's either the fan on my graphics card or the fan on my cpu, but it has gotten REALLY LOUD as of yesterday
. . . Is this a Fedora thing, or should I open up my computer, clean it, and maybe order more cooling paste?

I have an extension already that lets me control the gpu fan from high to low, and I always have it set on low
. . .

I just hope my computer doesn't burn out

Re: My fan is going crazy!

I'd install Gkrellm, lm_sensors and get a realistic picture of what the dynamic thermal situation actually is.

Re: My fan is going crazy!

After you install lm_sensors run sensors-detect and have a look at the temperatures and fan speeds.

If you fan is "REALLY LOUD" then maybe it's already too late and you're going to need a new fan ;-)

But you should open the case and find out what's going on inside.

Re: My fan is going crazy!

I know this sounds bloody obvious, but I've had fans start making all kinds of noise because a cable had moved an n'th of an inch, just enough to be ever-so-slightly clipped by a blade.

Re: My fan is going crazy!

Does the fan do this when you first power up? (before Fedora is up)
Maybe the bios got reset and the "smart fan control" setting is off.
(That's the default on my motherboard and it recently reset).
Maybe check the bios settings if the fans spin fast right away.

Re: My fan is going crazy!

Better install some of the software that was suggested then and see what is going on!

I just installed gkrellm. It's pretty cool.

Re: My fan is going crazy!

If you are using a blue-based desktop theme, this might work for you. (Gkrellm theme)
Attached Files
File Type: zip blulog.zip (41.1 KB, 14 views)

Re: My fan is going crazy!

You have to unzip this theme in the gkrellm directory

Code:
cd ~/.gkrellm2/themes/
unzip ~/Downloads/blulog.zip
then you can activate it in the "Themes" menu.

Your theme is very "blue" and much larger than the original theme.

Re: My fan is going crazy!

if you run KDE you can use the temperature widget. but you still need to install lm-sensors and run a sensors-detect

Re: My fan is going crazy!

You could use fancontrol which is in the lm_sensors package, to force fans to whatever speed you want but that would be dangerous. The idea is to use lm_sensors to confirm the hardware isn't hot (and so the high speed of the fan is incorrectly being used), then and only then use fancontrol to slow them down. The problem is I looked at fancontrol and it's hard to even see where the critical calls are or how it works, it seems to use echo to poke values into the hardware but I'm not sure. It seems hard to read to me.

What can I say. Tri-focals (and especially the need for them) suck.
