What does "Creating Root Filesystem mean" ? Pls Help

Hello,
I am having a doubt. What does "Creating your own Root File System" mean ?
Does it mean the location with following folder(/var,/urs,/mnt...etc) that we see when we press the BACK button twice from our HOME directory ie. " / " directory...?

Or "Creating your own Root File System" mean creation of "initrd" image ?

Or "Creating your own Root File System" mean creation of custom Linux Operating System (may be a stripped down OS version with limited application and functionality) ?

Pls let me know. I know these question may sound funny but its really important for me to know.
Also pls tell how do i create own Root Filesystem (any suggestion, link, tutorial)
Thank You.

Here is some information on building the linux root filesystem.

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO/buildroot.html

Some things might be a little dated, but the basics are there. When you install a linux distro, it usually builds the root filesystem for you.

And there is a difference between the root filesystem and the initrd.

The initrd is an initial ramdisk that is a temporary root filesystem that linux uses to boot from until it can mount the permanent root filesystem.

Re: What does "Creating Root Filesystem mean" ? Pls Help

Hello DBelton.
Sir i have came across something like BusyBox. Googling around says it is just Compact Package where U can customize it to have a LIMITED COMMANDS OF YOUR CHOICE for your custom buil linux. But when i did some more research on Building Root Filesystem, i also came across a page that "CREATE ROOT FILE SYSTEM WITH BUSYBOX"
Also came across something like "Build tiny Linux with BusyBox"...Now thats confusing me a lot as i am beginner in this linux world.

Can you please explain me what is this BusyBox, how to create a strip down linux with minimal functionality as u desire, and it BusyBox needed in stripping down Linux. ?

Sir pls help. Thank You.
