Unhappy Strange grey bar in gnome shell - maybe messaging panel?

Hello everyone.

I am new to Fedora and have little experience with linux overall, having tried Mint, Ubuntu, openSUSE and a few others. I personally like the gnome-shell and have had no problems so far in other distros.

However in Fedora, there's this annoying grey bar at the bottom which has a hotspot corner at the bottom right and whenever I open the Desktop overview (activities), it comes up - tried changing themes, but it remains the same. This never happened previously in other distros running the same version of Gnome shell.

I am running Fedora 17 with all patches - Gnome 3.4.2 - nvidia kmod installed (problem was there with nouveau too)

Have a look at the screenshot please:

Any help appreciated, I am a little weak in CLI so please a little patience here

Thanks.

Re: Strange grey bar in gnome shell - maybe messaging panel?

The grey bar at the bottom is a feature and not a bug, but I guess it will disappear with Fedora 18 and Gnome 3.6.

In the meantime try this shell extension and configure it as a bottom panel https://extensions.gnome.org/extensi...panel-docklet/

The bottom panel will replace the annoying grey bar and there's a little button in the lower right corner where you can manually enable it to see the messages.

The bar in the bottom is for notifications to appear. Some of the notifications on the system that you do not immediately act on are "deposited" there and you can access it later.

You can see the use immediately if you use any of the Instant Messaging applications, transmission, etc.

If you used GNOME shell in Mint, Ubuntu and openSUSE, you should have seen this bottom bar. By default, Mint uses cinnamon/mate and Ubuntu used Unity (unless you searched for and downloaded GNOME ubuntu).

Hope that throws some light on your issue.

P.S. I misunderstood problem and asked for a screenshot in my earlier (now deleted) post.

Thank you.

Is it not meant to 'theme' itself with whatever theme has been selected? With a beautiful transparent theme its an eye sore.

I remember that in openSuse it blended in with the theme, thats why I didnt notice it that much.
