Office network file print server setup

Hi,

We have a project where we have a mixed network environment of Windows XP, Windows Vista and Ubuntu desktops. We want to setup a Fedora server to be used as a file and print server.

From my readings, I can see that I will have to setup a Samba server for the windows users to connect and share files on the Fedora server, but I'm not sure about how to setup these features for the Ubuntu users.

Can anyone who has done this already provide some feedback and maybe some links on how this is done?

Thanks

Hello.
If this is mission critical data I would reconsider using Fedora as a server and would opt for CentOS instead. That will save you down time and lots of time fixing things that break during updates. But that is just my opinion
.
Ubuntu Client

On the Ubuntu client using the menu at the top, go to "Places" -> "Network". You will see an icon "Windows network" and should be able to browse to your shared folder. You will be asked for a password, leave it blank. Click the "Connect button.

Alternate : From the menu at the top select "Location" -> "Connect to a server". In the "Service type" pull down select "Windows share". Enter the server ip address in the "Server:" box and the share name in the "Share:" box. Click "Connect" and then "Connect" again on the second dialog box (no need for a password).

If you would like to mount your SMB share using your (server) hostname rather than the IP Address, edit /etc/hosts and add your samba server (syntax IP Address hostname).

192.168.1.100 hostname

Where "hostname" = the name of your samba server

Hi kyryder,

So are you saying that the Ubuntu users will also need to use Samba to share folders on the server. I thought, Samba was used only to allow windows user to share folders on a Linux based server. So, my assumption that Ubuntu users will use a different method to connect and share folders on the Linux server is wrong?

What we would like to have, is a folder that is constantly there on the users desktop (Windows and Ubuntu), this folder is the shared folder on the server. But we don't want users to have to connect to it every time they shutdown or restart their system, we want it to be constantly available.

Your feedback is appreciated.

Hi,
Yes you will still use smb with Ubuntu/Linux. I am pretty sure but not positive that if you edit /etc/hosts and enter the info listed above Ubuntu will auto mount the folder/s on restart.

A little research shows you will need the smbfs package for a Ubuntu client for shares to act as local disks.
Wish I was more helpful but my eyelids are getting very heavy and I don't want to make any mistakes or give you bad info so this will be my last post till tomorrow/latter today.
best of luck
