F18 Development

Pretty much exactly what it sounds like it is. This is the place to discuss and assist in the community development of F18, post Alpha.

WARNING: Any pre-release versions, Beta included, are for experienced testers only. Back up all existing data and read all threads in the version Development Forum before attempting an install. Errors can and will likely occur which may include data destruction or inability to boot other partitions on any and possibly all attached hard drives.

While FedoraProject needs and appreciates testers, you must remember to report issues directly to Bugzilla, after checking for pre-existing bugs.

F18 testing, nvidia and kernel-3.7.1-2.fc18.x86_64

Hi.
I test F18 and I install kernel-3.7.1-2.fc18.x86_64 from updates-testing repo.

I use driver nvidia, with akmod-nvidia, and that work fine for the 3.6 kernel.

But with the 3.7 kernel, X don't start...
I have this error in /vat/log/Xorg.0.log :

Re: F18 testing, nvidia and kernel-3.7.1-2.fc18.x86_64

i think the error is in nvidia module driver, it's a common bug that new and testing kernel don't have all kernel modules, expecially propietary ones available at the first moment, you should wait, or install nvidia binary manually to have proper kernel modules installed.

anyway, i have an intel card, and kernel 3.7.1 is a mess, no video in vlc xbmc or other are displaing correctly, while kernel 3.6.11 is perfect... i think the 3.7 kernel is too buggy at the moment.

Re: F18 testing, nvidia and kernel-3.7.1-2.fc18.x86_64

Ok, there are two bug report :
https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2634
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=892373

I remove this kernel, and I would see after installing the F18 final (2013-01-15 )...

Thank for your answer.

It seems that the same issue is occurring also on my system (video card: Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS, kernel: 3.7.1-2.fc18.x86_64).

With the following xorg.conf (generated by nvidia-xconfig)

Do you know how much will it take for the patched kernel to be available in the repositories?

I would recommend following the bug report and the koji database.

There is an update for akmod-nvidia (304.64-2 ) and with this update kernel-3.7.1-5 load nvidia.ko, and x start...

For me that solve problem...

Re: F18 testing, nvidia and kernel-3.7.1-2.fc18.x86_64

If you have tested it, would you add karma to the package here - https://admin.fedoraproject.org/upda...l-3.7.1-5.fc18

Ok I add karma, but I don't know if the solution is kernel-3.7.1-5.fc18 or akmod-nvidia-304.64-2...

May be twice...

Also on my system, the above-mentioned updates solve the problem. Now the nvidia module gets loaded and X can start.

Anyway, there are still some serious issues.
  1. Every time I launch some programs (e.g., gnome-control-center or google-chrome), X restarts and I get back to the Gnome login screen. (So, by the way, I haven't been able to switch from fallback mode to Gnome Shell yet in order to check if the latter works correctly).
  2. nvidia-settings crashes as soon as I select the OpenGL/GLX Information menu entry.

Is anyone encountering the same problems?

Here is my current xorg.conf (I had to explicitly set the correct resolution for my monitor through nvidia-settings, because it provides faulty EDID data):
Code:
# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 304.51 (mockbuild@) Mon Sep 24 20:53:47 CEST 2012

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 304.60 (mockbuild@) Fri Oct 19 02:28:58 CEST 2012

Re: F18 testing, nvidia and kernel-3.7.1-2.fc18.x86_64

Try changing your Section "Files" to look like this:

Code:
Section "Files"
        ModulePath "/usr/lib64/nvidia/xorg"
        ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
EndSection

That has solved the issue.
Thank you!
