Processing issue

hi all

i am new to the whole Linux thing, but at work we had to convert from windows to linux as our processing and memory requirements exceeded that of the windows.

i am currently using Intel quad core processor on fedora 11 with 64 GB of ram. my problem is during running a simulation model, the system shows that it uses only one core for a while then swaps the process for another core after that. so my question is is there a way to force the system to use all four cores at once cause this will reduce the calculation time for me big time .

thank you all for your time,

walid tawfik

pps: the software which i am currently using for the model is a java based software.

The only way for your program to use all 4 cores is if it is written to use threads. If it is written to be multithreaded, then linux will automatically use all cores available. Therefore, in your case, it could be that your java software was not written to load balance the modelling over threads.

thank you for the quick reply to my question

actually my software uses threading it is able to use all of the cores but not in the same time each core works for a min. then rests and the next one takes the process. my question was about if there is anyway to make the four of them work at the same time.

thank you a lot for your help

Like QuantumKnot already wrote, you must change your software to use more than one simultaneous thread.
