NVidia akmod in Fedora 18
I have a NVidia GeForce video card.
The OS is Fedora 18 x86 latest updates, KDE 4.9.5, 3.7.2-201 kernel.
I tried, using this guide, to install NVidia drivers (using akmod). I know, it's for Fedora 17, but I couldn't find one for 18.
Well, it didn't work.

I made a backup just before trying this so it's easy to fix the startup.
I see that this problem appeared in Fedora 18 tests: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=287305
Is there a solution...? Because, without NVdia drivers, I can't use 18 (slow speed in nouveau driver) and I will have to switch back to 17...
Thank you for any help.
Regards, Cosmin
Later edit: I found that akmod-nvidia-304.64-2.fc18.i686.rpm might work (more or less).
Which command should I use instead "yum install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686"?
Should be "yum localinstall akmod-nvidia-304.64-2.fc18.i686.rpm" + "yum install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686"?

Just do (if you do not have akmod installed),
Code:
yum install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs
I think you should already have nvidia-libs though.
I am seeing absolutely no problems with NVS 4200M card on my thinkpad. This is what I have installed
Code:
$ rpm -qa \*nvidia\*
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-304.64-3.fc18.x86_64
nvidia-xconfig-1.0-25.fc18.x86_64
nvidia-settings-1.0-26.fc18.x86_64
akmod-nvidia-304.64-2.fc18.x86_64
kmod-nvidia-3.7.2-201.fc18.x86_64-304.64-2.fc18.2.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-304.64-3.fc18.x86_64
$ uname -r
3.7.2-201.fc18.x86_64
I got akmod/kmod 304.64-2 through updates (I did not have problems before that either except one kernel). Perhaps, you could try updating the system and everything would become normal again?

Re: NVidia akmod in Fedora 18
The OS freezes at startup, I don't have access (not even to a terminal). So I can't update...
Anyway I used the backup...

Re: NVidia akmod in Fedora 18
I successfully installed all the Nvidia stuff following the same (old) guide ...
Had no problems at all ...

Re: NVidia akmod in Fedora 18
I tried again, hoping that maybe I did something wrong
I attached the output from terminal (too long to be posted directly)
Looks like it installs akmod-nvidia.i686 1:304.64-2.fc18.
Now the "reboot"...
Back in a few min...

Re: NVidia akmod in Fedora 18
Well, back from Windows...
The last lines of text which I see on screen when Fedora boots are:
Code:
[ OK ] Started Sendmail mail transport client
[ FAILED ] Failed to start wait for Plymouth Boot screen to quit.
See 'systemctl status plymouth-quit-wait.service' for details.
[ OK ] Reached target Multiuser
[ OK ] Reached target Graphical Interface
At this point I can write text on screen or generate a carriage return with Return key. But it doesn't do anything...
The only working command is "Ctrl+Alt+Delete"...

Re: NVidia akmod in Fedora 18
I found the problem: nouveau driver.
It seems that for the new kernel these commands are not enough to blacklist it:
Code:
su
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img
dracut /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)
So, I added the kernel parameters "nouveau.modeset=0 rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau".

You're perfectly right.
Have a look at this thread:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=287669 (see, in particular, post. n. 7).

Re: NVidia akmod in Fedora 18
I tried this workaround. It works perfectly to address the issue that Fedora 18 complains "no nvidia driver" when execute "startx".
Thanks!

This doesn't work for me.
After installing exactly like in the instructions, I get the described error.
So I enter GRUB, and edit the command - the kernel parameters to disable nouveau are already in place, but the system still won't boot.
Has anyone got an idea? Please note I can only use my system in single-user mode, as ctrl+alt+fX doesn't do anything, the system just hangs when I try to boot.
EDIT: I am using Nvidia Geforce 635M on an Asus K55VJ. The reason I need the propriety drivers is that nouveau offers really bad battery life.

Correct me if I misunderstood you--"installing exactly like in the instructions" means you followed http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=280750 ?
Can you try “startx” in your single user mode and see what the error message is?

Re: NVidia akmod in Fedora 18
@caligula1989
Try to boot, adding the kernel parameter nomodeset.
And then follow this guide:
