VLC Won't Start

The last time I used VLC, it crashed while playing music and won't retstart. Reinstalling did not help. When I run vlc from the command line, I get:

Code:
[xxxxx@xxxxx ~]$ vlc
VLC media player 3.0.0-git Vetinari (revision 2.2.0-git-10582-g9eb9eb0bd2)
[000055e2d01c61a8] core libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
[000055e2d0259118] core playlist: playlist is empty
[000055e2d0259118] core playlist: end of playlist, exiting
QObject::~QObject: Timers cannot be stopped from another thread
[xxxxx@xxxxx ~]$
I am on fedora 25 and gnome

Re: VLC Won't Start

name the media type

eg

Code:
file milkyway.mp3
milkyway.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 2.4.0, contains: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz, JntStereo

$ file Man\ in\ the\ Rain\ .mp3
Man in the Rain .mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 2.3.0, contains: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 320 kbps, 44.1 kHz, JntStereo
If they are mp3 have you enabled the codecs?

http://www.fedoraforum.org/?view=fedora_setup
bottom of page.

2) if you already have codecs for your file type then post the output to

vlc -v /pathway2/file

eg
Code:
vlc -v milkyway.mp3
VLC media player 3.0.0-git Vetinari (revision 2.2.0-git-10582-g9eb9eb0bd2)
[000055eb0d5c6108] core libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
[000055eb0d666938] pulse audio output warning: starting late (-16524 us)
QObject::~QObject: Timers cannot be stopped from another thread

Re: VLC Won't Start

I saw this online
Delete the ~/.config/vlc and ~/.cache/vlc folders or execute vlc --reset-config in a terminal.

SMR54 would recommend mpv :-)
P.S. I know using another media player is not a solution to your question, but it never gave issues.

It looks like vlc is running, use system monitor to confirm this (or not). If it shows in system monitor the backend is running but the GUI isn't showing. I had this problem a while back, for me it was a QT problem. Installing QT5 fixed me up.

My VLC stopped launching after some updates, as did Avidemux and a couple of other apps. The guis didn't appear but the app would show as running in system monitor. Don't know if some part or parts of qt5 got missed, conflicted, corrupted, or what, but re-installing qt5 fixed the problem.

Re: VLC Won't Start

I feel really stupid. I had quit at end of playlist selected. The problem with this is that if there isn't a playlist, it will lauch then shut down immediately. I would consider this a bug.

I fixed this by opening a movie file with vlc then, while the movie was playing, unselected this silly option. This should probaly be recoded to let you add a play list, at least once, before it quits. Ouch...........
