firefox and adobe reader - how to set PATH

I have successfully installed Adobe Reader 9.1. It shows up in firefox as a plugin properly.
It does NOT show up in edit->preferences as an Application (not sure if that matters).

However when I click on a PDF to download, I get an error in the browser:

"Could not launch Adobe Reader 9.1.2. Please make sure it exists in PATH variable in the environment. If the problem persists, please reinstall the application."

I put the /opt/Adobe/Reader9/bin in my PATH in ~/.bashrc and even rebooted to make sure all was set.

I still get the same message.

Where do I set my PATH to make this work?

How ? If you used the (recommended) RPM, then try:
sudo yum reinstall AdobeReader_enu

or whichever language version you installed.

I used the downloaded ....bin file from Adobe which was recommended to install Reader9.1 and puts it in the browser add-ons list properly. I tried reinstall but there is NO such yum package.

yum reinstall AdobeReader_enu

and yet if I do a "yum list | grep -i adobe" it is there

What I am looking for is what file to add a PATH variable to. That is all that appears to be missing.

I looked at and changed ~/.bashrc
I looked at /etc/bashrc and /etc/profile - pathmunge is interesting but I don't see it used.

Hello rholme,

If you never get anywhere with this, then try the rpm version available at the same place where you got that bin version...

I don't really know what the difference is except that I always install the rpm in Fedora and don't have this issue. I also install the deb version in Debian and Ubuntu without any issues.

For maximum compatibility, and to receive automatic updates, rcommend that you use Adobe's YUM repo for Acrobat Reader and Flash Player:

You should probably remove the binary package before installing the equivalent RPM. Note that it is possible that the binary installer contains some error (that the RPMs do not) that is causing your issue.

Thanks for your attempts. The real problem had nothing to do with PATH.
I tried to execute "acroread" from a shell and it all became clear.
Fedora 10 was VERY remiss in installing 32 bit libraries of many things.
To get many products to work, I had to hand install (or yum install) many 32 bit libraries.

In this case libxml was missing and so was libcanberra

Once I could run acroread in a shell, it works in firefox.

Using YUM and the RPM would automatically have taken care of these dependencies....

32-bit compatibility libraries are not necessarily automatically installed on a 64-bit Fedora OS, for obvious reasons (not everyone wants/needs them, since they consume lots of extra HDD space).

It's possible that both are broken with respect to dependency requirements. IMHO and experience, Acrobat Reader is not so good on many marks. But if you have the Adobe repo and RPMs installed, at least you get automatic updates.
