Preferred Applications

I tried using Preferred Applications (shortcut name for the command gnome-default-applications-properties) to set VLC as my default media player:

I tried:

vlc %U

...run on its own and in a terminal.

I also tried:

vlc

...run on its own and in a terminal.

Alas, no attempts seemed to work. Whenever I open videos it defaults straight to Totem. Does anyone know of any other ways to set default applications (e.g. config files)?

Assuming gnome and nautilus, right click the file then select properties -> open with. edit that section as appropriate
