Fedora Media Writer Test Day tomorrow! (2016-04-19)

Hi folks! Just another Test Day notice: tomorrow (Tuesday 2016-04-19) will be Fedora Media Writer Test Day!

As part of this planned Change for Fedora 24, the Fedora graphical USB writing tool - formerly called "Live USB Creator", and still technically called that in terms of source repos and filenames, but in the process of being rebranded as "Fedora Media Writer" - is being extensively revised and rewritten. The idea is the new tool will be sufficiently capable, reliable, and cross-platform usable that it can be the primary download for Fedora Workstation 24: the main 'flow' of the Workstation download page will run through the tool, instead of giving you a download link to the ISO file and various instructions for using it in different ways.

This would be a pretty big change, and of course it would be a bad idea to do it if the tool isn't ready. So this is an important Test Day! We'll be testing the new version of the tool to see whether it's working well enough and catch any remaining issues.

It's also pretty easy to join in: all you'll need is a USB stick you don't mind overwriting, and a system (or ideally more than one!) you can test booting the stick on (but you don't need to make any permanent changes to it).

All the instructions are on the wiki page, so please read through and come help us test tomorrow!

As always, the event will be in #fedora-test-day on Freenode IRC. If you don’t know how to use IRC, you can read these instructions, or just use WebIRC.

Just out of curiosity, will there be a move away from providing download links to ISOs? I can appreciate this change as a default, but would not be happy to hear at some point down the road one could not, at least without jumping through hoops, obtain an ISO through a good old fashioned https download.

Re: Fedora Media Writer Test Day tomorrow! (2016-04-19)

The idea is to make the tool the most visible deliverable for Workstation (not the other flavors, I don't think) but it'll certainly still be possible to find the ISOs. I don't think the web design is finished yet, but worst case we're not about to hide them from the mirrors or anything, so you can always find them in the mirrors. They'll still be in the torrent tracker.

I'd bet they'll still be available from the download page anyway, though, just as one of the 'secondary options' down the side or at the bottom or whatever. There are still obvious use cases that need the ISO file, like VMs. And people who still actually use those weird round shiny disc things.

Uh, huh. I've got your number.

It's a conspiracy to diminish the collectibility/retail value of my entire (massive) collection of home-burned install CDs/DVDs.

All flavours are available in the media writer tool. I created a copy of F23 Cinnamon 64-bit with it. I think the ISOs will be safe because of torrent distribution though.

Way back when, I used to have an entire classroom sized cork-board in my office covered with thumbtacked "free" AOL CDs that had been sent in the mail. There were a few home-made "coasters" in there from buffer overrun burns, too. But mostly they were all donated and hand delivered by the Post office.

AOL op-art! <....>

Thank you Adam. Still scarred from previous *simplifying* *help* that removed useful or even necessary tools/features (not specifically with Fedora but in general).

Re: Fedora Media Writer Test Day tomorrow! (2016-04-19)

My F24 tests were OK, I used the program to read a previously downloaded iso.

It would be a nice enhancement to also, when the program states "finished" to also post the sha256sum of the ISO, and if possible some future way, to verify the downloaded ISO against the library's checkpoint file.

Re: Fedora Media Writer Test Day tomorrow! (2016-04-19)

Further to the above (a response to my posting)

I wrote a multi page libreoffice.odt file highlighting bugs and design changes that should be included into Fedora Media Writer

Its still having some teething problems. I tested with a download from the web and with the Custom option. The usual human practice immediately after the program states "finished" is to exit the program and pull the flashdrive. But in may cases, the flashdrive has not been fully updated.

Perform this action before extracting your Flashdrive, From the command line issue a sync call as:
sync;

When the command prompt returns, it signals that the USB flashdrive is fully up to date (buffers were flushed) and the flashdrive may be removed.

There were a few other nuisances and bugs that I identified.

No seriously why is it that dd the default method in creating LiveUSBs?
cp worked just as well and better than dd IMHO...

I also liked that liveusb-creator had the cp method.... The dd method sometime screws up my usb drives, and I have to reformat them.... But Most Of All - I don't want all my other data deleted off my USB drive.... I want to use them for more than just a Distro....

Please put a CP option back in!!!!
