F25 can't set plymouth graphical theme

hello fellow fedora users,

I did a fresh Fedora 25 install after a while i was forced to use Windows/Debian. With no suprise everything works just well, except for plymouth graphical boot - it works, but only in text mode. Graphical themes (charge, solar) stopped working after nvidia proprietary drivers were installed. What i did to restore plymouth was:

- from grub command line i picked suitable mode
Code:
set pager=1
insmod vbe
vbeinfo
- added these lines to /etc/default/grub
Code:
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX="keep"
GRUB_VIDEO_BACKEND="vbe"
GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT="gfxterm"
GRUB_FONT_PATH="/boot/grub2/fonts/unicode.pf2"
GRUB_GFXMODE="1680x1050x32"
- ran this command, as i found there is some bug in 10_linux script
Code:
sed -i -e 's/sixteenbit="16"/sixteenbit=""/' /etc/grub.d/10_linux
- created a new grub.cfg
Code:
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
- installed solar theme
Code:
dnf install plymouth-theme-solar
- set solar theme and recreate initrd
Code:
plymouth-set-default-theme solar
/usr/libexec/plymouth/plymouth-update-initrd
according to all instructions i found around the web this should be enough to have nice graphical boot splash after reboot, however no matter what i do all i get is gray screen with 3 rectangles indicating boot progress. The only changes that work are text mode themes, like details or tribar. Im probably missing something related to nvidia driver, any help would be very appreciated.

Re: F25 can't set plymouth graphical theme

Unfortunately, booting in text mode is a "feature" of the nVidia driver. In the past, it was possible to persuade nVidia to boot graphically if you were prepared to ignore the warning messages logged regarding operating in an unsupported mode. More recently I have not found a way to achieve this.

With an nVidia card, the options now seem to be
  • Use nouveau driver and have Plymouth graphical boot but do without some of the advanced capabilities of the card, or
  • Use nVidia and use maximum card capabilities but forgo the graphical boot.
However if someone has worked out how to get Plymouth graphics while using nVidia drivers I would be very interested!
