Question Re: Overnight Crash of Fedora 25 Laptop

Interesting thread... All, may I also contribute with my modest/beginerlin knowledge?

This is interesting, after all:

Quote:
myname ➜ ~ %{journalctl| grep -i crash
mars 14 17:53:53 myname kernel: [drm] The gpu crash dump is required to analyze gpu hangs, so please always attach it.
mars 14 17:53:53 myname kernel: [drm] GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error
mars 15 23:54:38 myname kernel: [drm] The gpu crash dump is required to analyze gpu hangs, so please always attach it.
mars 15 23:54:38 myname kernel: [drm] GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error
mars 16 15:44:04 myname abrt-hook-ccpp[22174]: If abrtd crashed, /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern contains a stale value, consider resetting it to 'core'
It is obvious that GPU crashed. Now... Which Dell laptop??? I could not tell from the data I see, but I can tell: this laptop has ONLY one GFX option: Integrated INTEL HD Graphics controller:

Quote:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 530 (rev 06) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Dell Device 06de

Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]

[virtual] Expansion ROM at 000c0000 [disabled] [size=128K]

Capabilities: [ac] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit-
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [100] Process Address Space ID (PASID)
Capabilities: [200] Address Translation Service (ATS)
Capabilities: [300] Page Request Interface (PRI)
Kernel driver in use: i915
Kernel modules: i915
I found one very good Bugzilla, very closely describing this thread: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97211

Although, Nvidia GPU HW does NOT show here on lspci -v, but, in other hand, on this bugzilla Nvidia GPU is NOT turned on as well (as I read)! It also says that this is NOT related to any GFX!

You might to try the following:

Quote:
Tested again with this version of drm-intel-nightly:

commit 5b633f423e27af3a7f30d303e243f5a2e82917ae
Author: Chris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk>
Date: Tue Oct 18 14:27:24 2016 +0100

drm-intel-nightly: 2016y-10m-18d-13h-24m-11s UTC integration manifest

and then booting with intel_iommu=igfx_off (because of https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98309). Now suspend works!

Is this still a bug?
You should try to fix this error by adding into the BOOT_LINE (in your grub2 grub.cfg) the command in RED!

So, intermediatelin, me, begginerlin, would like you to go from here... Please, keep us posted!

Since the problem last happened on Monday morning, I'm going to go for boot -1, as it looks like the system crashed at 04:55:15 on the morning of 17 March 2017, would you agree? Here is the last hour or so before the 'crash' ..

Already done. :-) I found that bug, too. It was the first thing I tried, and when that didn't stop the crashes, posted here.

Much appreciated, anyway.

Re: Overnight Crash of Fedora 25 Laptop

Just had a thought, actually. Because I'm long-sighted, I rarely (if ever) use the laptop default screen. So it sits to my left and serves mainly as my 'photo album', cycling through my travel photographs. :-)

But occasionally, I'll fire up xclock, and put that in a corner of the left-hand screen. Since Monday, I haven't done that, because well, since the thing is going to crash every night, why bother?

But it hasn't crashed. Could this be linked?

Re: Overnight Crash of Fedora 25 Laptop

seems most likely, try using xclock again today and see if it crashes again overnight. if it does then you know that is the cause

It is certainly GFX bug. In order further to assess the peculiar situation, I need the following:
[1] Make of your DELL laptop (so I can see what HW/devices do you have);
[2] After crash, your Xorg.1.log (or the latest log after the crash);
[3] Actually, Xorg.0.log would be also beneficial;
[4] df command output;
[5] What frontend DT you are using (XFCE, GNOME, KDE, MATE...)?
[6] dmesg output would be also cool!

Thank you,

But, one thing I am certain: your version does NOT have Radeon. You don't have a discrete AMD Radeon R7 GPU, for sure (I see this from lspci -v).

I do not know why most of the people do NOT configure their UEFI option in BIOS, rather use ONLY Legacy support (CSM ON)!

Who configured your laptop? IT Admins? They should learn about UEFI once for all (it is modern era, stone age finished in 2005/2006)!

Since this PC came out somewhere more than a year ago (02/2016),you might also upgrade BIOS, and see if this helps (please, do so, there were problems with MCUs for SKL i3/i5/i7Xeons at that time).

Re: Overnight Crash of Fedora 25 Laptop

Oh, and I configured the laptop. But .. erm .. how to put this? I hate my job and can't be bothered doing more than the minimum required. So I didn't configure anything, just banged fedora on there and want it to work. :-|

Thank you,

Four days without a crash, since xclock no longer running.

I'll wait for fifteen days, and if there are no crashes, fire up xclock..
