Firefox 53 notable hardware support changes and NPAPI in version 52 onwards

In the release notes for the upcoming Firefox 53, Mozilla have stated that support for processors older than AMD Opteron (available from 2003 onwards) and Intel Pentium 4 (available from 2000-2008) is being dropped in Linux builds.

I don't think anyone here is using hardware running earlier processors than that but please be aware that the change is coming and Firefox may not work with your hardware after 52.X.X has been replaced by 53.X.X in Fedora or any other Linux distribution for that matter.

Interestingly they are also dropping 32-bit Mac OSX builds but leaving Windows and Linux versions available. Presumably their user metrics have given them just cause to do so.

Additionally, in version 52 they have removed support for Netscape Plugin API (NPAPI) plugins other than Flash. Silverlight, Java, Acrobat and the like are no longer supported.

Thanks anti,

I guess it's time to move all my bookmarks/logins from FF to Opera in my old servers.

FF 52.0 arrived in CentOS as a new ESR release recently too.

I don't care about Oracle's Java, but IcedTea for OpenJDK is essential for me and that works still perfectly fine.

I just copied that line directly from the FF 52 release notes stating Java among other things. It wasn't vendor specific, so if IcedTea carries on working that is useful to know

Well, actually, two of my machines are Pentium 4 2.8GHz, and two are even older Celeron 1.7 GHz machines. I'm going to replace them soon, though.

Bert, the P4 would be okay still, they are dropping support for anything older than the Pentium 4 range. What socket type do the celeron systems use? If the socket supports Pentium 4 processors then they may be okay too.

I still have a P4 system (was packed up and working) along with parallel port for printer and so forth. It has two kinds of floppy drives). Do you remember the 1.44's and the 5.5inch floppies?
