Unable to login after dnf update

Help, I am unable to login into Gnome on Fedora 25 after a dnf update.

I am able to login via SSH and on a console but the GUI keeps looping. I also noticed I can login into Gnome Classic. It seems to be a Gnome 3.2 issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Unable to login after dnf update

If you use gdm-3.22.2, I think gdm issue. Please upgrade gdm-3.22.3.

Re: Unable to login after dnf update

I believe that you are right.

I am new to Fedora and I am not sure what steps to take. I tried downloading and installing it but I received the following error.

Error: Transaction check error:
file /usr/share/doc/gdm/NEWS from install of gdm-1:3.22.3-1.fc25.i686 conflicts with file from package gdm-1:3.22.2-1.fc25.x86_64

Re: Unable to login after dnf update

Looks like you downloaded the 32 bit (.i686) version instead of the 64 bit (x86_64) version. You need the 64 bit version of the package.

Thank you very much for the help. That was it. I need to pay a little more attention to that.

That worked for me. I have a Fedora 25 Workstation virtual machine. After the latest updates I too was unable to log in. The greeter just kept looping back to login. This was when attempting to use the 4.9.13 kernel. I rebooted to the 4.9.11 kernel as was able to log in. From there I upgraded gdm as was suggested. Another reboot and all is well now. I am able to log in using the 4.9.13 kernel. I used dnf to upgrade the package.

PHP Code:
dnf --enablerepo=u*g update gdm

Re: Unable to login after dnf update

In this case may help to kill all leftover user processes by switching to a VT and doing a "pkill -u". You might have achieved the same effect by doing a reboot.

Re: Unable to login after dnf update

Huh, this takes me back. It's been years since Fedora pushed a set of updates that broke (my) systems this badly.

Reverting back to an earlier kernel did not help me at all. I had to Ctrl-Alt-F2 to a virtual terminal and install gdm from updates-testing from there. Didn't help that dnf was having trouble syncing repos for some reason, had to

Code:
sudo dnf clean all
and

Code:
sudo dnf --enable-repo=updates-testing update gdm
a half dozen times before it would complete the sync, find the gdm update and install it.

Re: Unable to login after dnf update

My 0.02$: I recommend you switch to Xfce

log in as root in a terminal,
yum group install "Xfce Desktop"
yum install lxdm

systemctl disable gdm.service (forget about any more issues with gdm)
systemctl enable lxdm.service (super stable)

then reboot, and when logging in, choose Xfce from the session selector at bottom left.

Wow, Fedora temporarily breaks gdm logins once due to some missing/incorrect dependency metadata, and your advice is to ditch the entire desktop and learn to use a very, very different one? Way to hijack an issue to push an agenda.

This is clearly just an rpm packaging error. The updates that went out should have had a dependency on gdm version >= 3.22.3 so that they wouldn't have installed before that version of gdm got pushed from updates-testing to updates. A similar screw up could happen with any set of interdependent packages, it's not (by itself) an argument to switch desktops.

I am sorry if I came wrong across, but I've been using Fedora since FC3 or so, and redhat since before that, and I have come across all kinds of situations, and usually offer a quick out, so that people can continue with their jobs. So, unless your job is to debug GNOME, well, I offered my .02.

OK, but switching desktops is not in any way a quick out unless the user is already familiar with the new one. Otherwise they're going to have to learn a whole new UI while they attempt to continue with their jobs. That's going to seriously slow them down, at least for a while.

I get your point, but if you have once used Xfce, it's simpler than pretty much anything, specially compared to Gnome. And simplicity is the key to happiness.

Re: Unable to login after dnf update

Sounds like you switched to Xfce in the Gnome 2 era... Gnome 3 (Gnome Shell) may not be simple under the hood but from a user point of view it's very minimalist and unobtrusive. Too much so for some tastes, in fact, especially in the earlier versions. Comes down to personal preference, in the end.

Re: Unable to login after dnf update

I think Bobx001 was offering you relief from grief to come. I used gnome until gnome3 and six months of that was all I could take. I switched to XFCE and oh what a difference. It's a simple clean desktop with optional tweaks, and the look and feel is very gnome2-ish. After updates everything still works, every time. I don't have to fix something every other update. But as you say, personal preference.
