Annoyed with Firefox

I clicked on a link within one of my yahoo.com emails. This last Firefox release does something internally that it did not do with earlier versions. After visiting the link, a web page with some annoying adverts, I could hear the fan winding up in speed.

Top command showed FF at 140% cpu (on 1 of the 2 cpus). I reverted back to the plain old yahoo mail panel. Still, FF cpu did not drop, continued to consume 140% cpu.

I exited FF, and restarted FF. CPU was normal at 12%. What The Frivolous (WTF) activity is happening when we visit a webpage?.

I am now using chromium, and will see if it too shows similar actions.

Re: Annoyed with Firefox

I've noticed that myself with FF recently on a couple of pages. chromium seems more stable and less prone to resource leaks caused by dodgy scripts.

Chromium for that same page (Dilbert blog) went to 58%, and chromium cpu returned to normal 3% (while I am typing my measurement response to the above posting). Time to report a bug to FF.

also try adding the following filters to your ad/script blocker if they aren't already present:

EasyPrivacy and Fanboy's Annoyance List

indeed or qupzilla. however they both are built using chromium code so if bobx001 has an issue with trusting chromium code it wouldn't help him much

Interesting.

but yeah, I will stop posting *politically motivated* posts, and shut my beak from now on on these issues.
I wonder what is Midori based on.

I use UBlock Origin with:

uBlock filters – Badware risks
uBlock filters – Privacy
uBlock filters – Unbreak
EasyList
EasyPrivacy
Malware Domain List
malware domains
Fanboy’s Annoyance List
Fanboy’s Social Blocking List
Peter Lowe’s Ad and tracking server list

The "Fanboy" ones block annoying social widgets like Facebook, these work well and since Firefox is then working much less you get lower cpu and fan noise

marko, Fanboy's Annoyance list contains the Social list contents too, you don't need to add both

Re: Annoyed with Firefox

Firefox and Chrome are rushing to implement every new Javascript and HTML5 feature. I think it's best to use Opera or Chromium. I've been using Opera in Windows lately, it has an ad-blocker built in.

Re: Annoyed with Firefox

Hm, I tried Opera yesterday just for fun. No, it's not bad.

The integrated ad blocker is quite simple, but there is a nicely working alternative addon, with same set of filters as AdBlock, probably based on it.
No NoScript though and those I saw didn't persuade me.
And integrated VPN is cool.

But it doesn't have any setting for mouse scroll speed. I don't know why and I don't know why all the
browsers use so low scroll-per-line setting, it's just horribly slow to move thru the page.
In FF, it can be accessed, along with a crapload of other settings in the about:config. Same here with opera://flags and same as in Chrom {e|ium}, so no mouse scroll speed setting I can see.

It's the small things that make the world, so FF is still my favorite.

Re: Annoyed with Firefox

you can add custom filters, e.g. fanboys annoyance list, easyprivacy to opera's ad blocker just by entering the url when you switch settings to advanced mode.

Re: Annoyed with Firefox

Ad Block Filters: Fanboy Ultimate List (This includes Easylist, Easyprivacy, Enhanced Trackers List and Annoyances List) 'One Filter List To Rule Them All' - Well Almost ;}

Blocks Adverts, Trackers and the Annoyances list, it may cause some false positives.

I use uMatrix, uBlock Origin, Disconnect.me & Privacy Badger
