Question Fedora 18 Live fails to load

I believe this is a hardware related issue. I have NVIDIA GTX 580 graphics card. The nouveau driver gives multiple error messages while trying to launch the login screen, which then corrupts and locks. tty2 is accessible and functional.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Fedora 18 Live fails to load

Well, first off, it would be useful if you gave a little more information.

Like..

Is this an upgrade or a fresh install?
If an upgrade, how did you do the upgrade?
If a fresh install, did you use the LiveCD or the DVD?

Also, a hint about what the error messages you encountered actually said would be helpful

In addition to those error messages, and questions, since you can get to tty2, can you post the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log as well?

Thanks for the reply. I am sorry for the lack of details. Here are some answers:

This is just booting from live DVD. No installation or upgrade yet. The system freezes at dm stage in the standard download but I get tty access. It also freezes with KDE spin live DVD while launching KDE (no dm here for some reason, probably due to enabled autologin) but this time no tty access.

I will retry with the standard version, although I actually need to see and install the KDE spin eventually, and post the error messages and the log file shortly.

Here are some of the error messages:

[164.615636][drm]nouveau failed to idle channel 1
...................[drm]nouveau failed to idle channel 2
...................[drm]nouveau failed to idle channel 3
................... (many repeats of the above)
...................PFIFO playlist update failed
nouveau GPU lockup - switching to software fbcon

Please find the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file in this link

FYI, I noticed the troubleshooting option while booting from Live DVD (KDE spin) and opted for the basic video there and was able to get a working Live OS with a low display resolution of course.

Re: Fedora 18 Live fails to load

I wonder if it's related to or even the same bug that hit Fedora 17 installs.

The workaround for F17 was to add nouveau.noaccel=1 to the kernel line.

This makes the computer freeze in an even earlier stage, necessitating a hard reboot.

Re: Fedora 18 Live fails to load

You can disable the nouveau KMS by using the nouveau.modeset=0 kernel parameter, but that is the "big hammer" approach

Re: Fedora 18 Live fails to load

I speculate that the option of basic graphics under troubleshooting on LiveCD probably does a similar thing in terms of disabling nouveau KMS. I still get a decent 1900x1200 resolution there. I intend to do a fresh install to replace fedora 17. I guess I will do that via the basic graphics option first and then get into the nvidia driver (akmod/kmod) installation adventure afterwards. I just wanted someone to know that this is a real issue. When a Live DVD freezes the system, it doesn't reflect good on the distribution, even though it originates from the graphics driver. I have been using Fedora since 15, I like it quite a bit, I will hopefully keep using it for several more years. I just mean to be constructively critical.

Re: Fedora 18 Live fails to load

Hi

I tried to load the Fedora 18 Live CD on a MAC via VMWare - Thats how I had been using Fedora 17, create a VM, load the CD and then install onto that. However Fedora 18 doesn't make it past the initial Wallpaper, Trying to figure out how to get some extra info on this, because I cant get a console view to see what failed..

As an aside, will Fedora 18 install on MAC's ? Fedora 17 did not, It didn't even detect my harddisk.. (no encryption software running)

Thanks
Anup

Re: Fedora 18 Live fails to load

this thread clearly doesn't have anything to do with live images, so moving. 'basic graphics' indeed does the same as 'nomodeset'.

Re: Fedora 18 Live fails to load

I'm pretty sure this same issue was addressed in the irc channel yesterday.

You need to add the kernel parameter acpi=off during install and the first few times you boot.

when you boot into your newly installed system, run an update, reboot, install rpmfusion and then the nvidia drivers

http://rpmfusion.org/Howto/nVidia

Then reboot normally (as in without adding acpi=off). If you need more complete (step by step) instructions don't hesitate to ask.

-- Please file a bug with the for nouveau driver if this fixes your issue.
