Disable input device for X

Hi,

I have a Kore Controller from Native Instruments (picture: http://www.tim-carter.com/music-prod.../pics/kore.jpg), using it as a sound card on Fedora 12. Its input knobs are supported by Linux, too, but they are pretty useless for me.
It came out that these input knobs send mouse movements from time to time, letting my mouse pointer jumping to the upper left corner of the screen.
So I want to disable the knobs, i.e. I want X to not interpret these "knob actions" as mouse movements.

What is the best way to achive this? Can I disable it somewhere in HAL configuration or do I have to modify xorg.conf? And how do I do this?

Simply plugging out the Kore Controller is not an option for me because I use it as sound card.

Disabling it using HAL is probably your best option.

Apparently there's an option for xorg.conf, but not sure what side effects that might have, see

Hm, o.k., but I would need some advice how to disable it with HAL -- I did not find good documentation for HAL up to now!

So is someone here able to tell me how to disable an input device in HAL (it might be a little complex, because as far as I can see both Audio I/O and the input knobs are handled by the kernel module sound-usb-caiaq, but I only want to disable knob input and keep audio active...)

Yeah, join the club.

Your best bet is to follow whatever links aren't broken on the freedesktop HAL page, read whatever specs are available then look at the policies that are already on your system for examples/ideas, do some trial and error, and maybe ask on some mailing lists.

If you're hoping for a HAL guru to come across this post and give you a quick solution to such a rare issue, you may be waiting for a long time.

Ah, o.k., so you just tell me the reason why HAL is deprecated and shall be replaced by some other thing

Not sure what side effects there might be with adding Options to xorg.conf file settings . . . that really says it ALL . . . at least from my experiences.

But still, experimenting with /etc/X11/xorg.conf files for the mouse and/or sound driver settings seems more direct than HAL . . .

you make the xorg.conf change (ok . . . more like experiment ). . . and then go back to look at what happened
and search in /var/log/Xorg.0.log file for the warnings . . .

But yeah . . . the side effects . . . you get used to it maybe . . .
and well, if you aren't prone to drinking, you may well be on that path afterwards -
so, no . . . experiments with xorg.conf won't make it into any 12-step programs.

I found some info on disabling an input device with HAL:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Input..._configuration

I will try this this evening and report any progress...

Re: Disable input device for X

Just for information:

I managed to disable the Kore Controller's input knobs without any problems by putting a file 10-kore.fdi into /etc/hal/fdi/policy with the following content:

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
  <deviceinfo version="0.2">
    <device>
      <match key="input.product" contains="Kore controller">
         <remove key="input.x11_driver"></remove>
      </match>
     </device>
  </deviceinfo>

Re: Disable input device for X

Another way would be to find out which driver it is using and see if there are options for it.

modinfo [name of the driver]

lsmod can help with that.
