F18 problems

Just finnished... reinstalling F17. I tried with F18 xfce as well on a different set of partitions, nice new installer. Firewalld looks very nice but you can never shut down port 22, even if you shut down all services. Shut it down and used iptables directly. Ran into trouble with Application menu, all icons are disappearing, then graphic performance with nouveau decreased with a rate of @10% with glxgears, one bug disappeared, but it crashes constantly after about 5 seconds of shutting down glxgears, with coloured horizontal lines on the screen. What is so different in graphics from f17 with the latest kernel and nouveau?

Re: F18 problems

Figured. 3.7.3-101.fc17 crashes on 17 too but only after a few hours uptime. 3.6.10-2.fc17 works on 17 fully updated.

Re: F18 problems

Just tried 3.8.3-103.fc17 from Fedora update repo. It crashes in glxgears or other graphics software. Anybody has similar problems? Last kernel that works is 3.6.10-2.fc17. I remember now i'm getting some sort of error at early boot time, something with a misaligned registry from BIOS.

Trying to write what i filmed on the screen with the camera while booting 3.6.10-2.fc17, it flashes these messages for less than a second, couldn't find this in any log. Some might laugh...

Re: F18 problems

Hello George, did you ever solve this crashing problem? Ever since I removed F17 and put in F18 I've been getting the same crash, with lines all over the screen and a frozen system. And yes, the stock 3.6.10-2 kernel works perfectly. The problem only surfaces when I run an update. I have been doing the update, rebooting, and then removing the new kernel so that all the latest files are forced to run with the 3.6.10-2 kernel. That seemed to work until this week. When I removed the latest 3.8.7-201 kernel and left the pc to run with the 3.6.10-2 I suddenly lost the print server. No H/W issue - the Live DVD has the printer working.
So, did you ever find a fix? ....thx

Re: F18 problems

Yes, exactly. On Friday I ended up reinstalling F18 since the print server had disappeared. After installation I replaced the noveau driver with the nvidia driver. Since then everything works perfectly, even after applying all the latest updates.

That's a preferences thing in XFCE. Don't ask me why no icons is the default.
