Brother MFC-5890CN printer working but scanner is not

hi guys,
I'm trying to set up my Brother MFC-5890CN pritner/scanner on Linux. Drivers are supplied by brother themselves and installed them via their automated script. Printer initially did not work but after I restarted the printer everything works fine.

However, the scanner does not seem to work and I'm not sure what the problem is:

in xsane i can select the printer as normal which then leads to the error: failed to open device 'brother 3:bus1;dev1:Error during device I/O'

launching xscane via terminal gives:

No protocol specified

(xsane:5365): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0

scanimage via terminal gives:

scanimage: open of device brother3:bus1;dev1 failed: Error during device I/O

sudo scanimage:

scanimage: rounded value of br-x from 215.9 to 215.88
scanimage: rounded value of br-y from 355.6 to 355.567
scanimage: output is not a file, exiting

anybody any ideas? :/

Re: Brother MFC-5890CN printer working but scanner is not

I figured out eventually that the scanner does work as root.

Initially took ownership of the usb port which did solve the issue but unfortunatley this isn't permanent after restarts, but I managed to solve the problem permanently with this.

Interestingly enough Brother provides a UAD rpm file on their webpage but that one must be too old (the lastest they have is for fedora 17)
