X totally borked after recent yum upgrade

So, Friday, i ran updates on my laptop.

Laptop:
MacBook Pro, 2008 model, nvidia graphics adapter 8600 gt iic.

I've been running fedora on it since FC18 or so, i did an in place upgrade to fc19 right after it released, and its been working well.

There were something like 600 upgrade tasks to perform when i updated friday, FC19 has been harsh on the updates.. Anyway.

After the update, x is broken. I get the incredibly useful "OOPS" error when the session manager/login attempts to load at boot time. If i init 3 i can get to a console just fine.

So, from that console, i ran startx, and grabbed /var/log/messages and /var/log/Xorg.0.log after it failed.

messages.txt
Xorg.0.log.txt

I'm running nouveau, since its been working well enough thus far.
I did try switching to the nvidia proprietary driver once this failed, as ive had good luck with that in the past on other machines, and found that the driver doesnt work with my card, or so im reading, because its an Optimus. That's neither here nor there, nouveau is fine, if i can get that working again, i'm more than happy.

I'm not exactly a novice (RHCE), but sometimes X confounds me. I'm primarily a server guy, and we dont even install X on our servers. Give me a console any day, but its hard to be productive with just a console on your workstation, you know.

Thanks for any input!

Howdy,

X problems are the pits. I would try the "xserver=vesa nomodeset" command line parameters with grub2 just to get the machine going again.

That is an Awesome screen name.

Yea, vesa will likely get me up and running, but still doesnt solve the problem, Thanks for the reply though.

Re: X totally borked after recent yum upgrade

It does not look like an X issue, more like Gnome. Did you spot this:
Sep 15 09:16:17 kenshin kernel: [ 189.320136] gnome-shell[1953]: segfault at 7fc1afc4cf00 ip 0000003841d3cf36 sp 00007fff9bb571c8 error 4 in libc-2.17.so[3841c00000+1b6000]
Perhaps there is something you installed in F18 which has left stuff lying around in the upgrade to F19. There is a lot of noise relating to missing themes, unico and murrine which I have not seen before.

I did notice that. Wasnt sure what to make of it though. I'll poke around there and see what I can come up with.

Re: X totally borked after recent yum upgrade

Going on the assumption that this was a package problem, and not a config problem, i took the reinstall route.

yum reinstall glibc

yum reinstall gnome-*

After about 60 package reinstallations, i rebooted, and boom, i have X again.

Thanks everyone!
