Avidemux 2.5.5

I'm trying to use Avidemux to add subtitles (from Gnome Subtitles, .srt file) to an AVI movie. Never used either one before.

Here's the content of the .srt file:

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:03,500
John Doe (c) 2011

I followed the instructions here:

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/embed-s...crossplatform/

At the end of the process, you Save the file. When I Save the file, there's no name in the Filename box. So I give it a name "subtitle test", and close Avidemux.

Voila! When I play the saved file "subtitle test" - the actual subtitle on the video reads: "subtitle test" in italics (no quotation marks). Nothing in the .srt file shows up on the video. In other words, the subtitle has the *format* I put in the .srt file, but not the correct text.

Why is the newly saved filename being used as the subtitle itself?

Thanks for any advice.
