".. it is not worth rushing out to purchase."

Can't say I'm surprised. According to most of the reviews I've read thus far, the features in Vista do not justify the cost of upgrading.

The BBC are running a live debate some time soon. They currently are looking for a VISTA, MAC and LINUX user to write in bigging up their OS of choice. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6288119.stm

The top 3 get to sit together and slag each other's OS's (ok maybe debate the pro's n conns)
Lets see how MS can manipulate this little bit of press.

It got a 7.8 rating, which I think is fair.

I try to keep a level and balanced view of Vista. The graphical part is amazing - not the effects, just the colors and glassy look. I guess "visuals" are a better word for it. It is true that it really isn't worth upgrading if you are after a revolutionary new OS that will justify 5 years in the waiting (not really "making" because along the way they restarted). But I don't think it's too bad (yet) for peole who will buy a new PC.

There's a grand launching of Vista on Feb 3 in my country, in one of the newest and biggest malls, with fireworks display and the hottest local bands. I'm thinking of coming, but only if it is approved to be Official Business at work - although we are practically the bastion of Open Source in our country, we are keenly interested in latest developments. The boss told me we'd probably be there if I like, no harm in a look see, I'm sure my Fedora-powered laptops won't just die on me for it

Anyway, I actually hope Vista turns out great for what it is, and the "better security, better stability" promise holds. It'll probably be several months before I actually get to try it myself, but if it does a good job, it can only make its Open Source counterparts strive to raise the bar even more. In the end, we all win.

I thought this was funny: It's a 7.8 out of 10 - that's a "very good" ? A 78 on a test is a B?

Anyway, a balanced view is best IMO. I can only shake my head when I hear enthusiasts speak of crushing MS, as if less choice on the desktop is something to be desired. I used MS for 14 years and could do it again, if need be.

Having said that, I do enjoy making fun of them.

I think they're launching Mac OS X, I mean Vista, on Monday, so in about 3 days now.

Gotta remember that one.

Six years and six turds.

Since my first computer, let's see .. there was DOS 4.0, Windows 3.0, Windows 95 and 98... That would make at least six.

The writer has a pretty good point. I tried Vista out yesterday and was quite disappointed. I expected something really "kick-ass" from MS but Vista seems to be XP + some interface changes.

Well, we all know that as soon as anyone gets a Vista computer, they should upgrade to a superior OS. In this case, I'd venture to say that Red Hat 6.1 should be much more adept than Vista.

Hello Leigh:
That means that they haven't changed anything ....... well I guess it keeps Norton Utilities et al in business ... unless that is unwanted software.....
