HTTPD does not start

Hi.

The httpd stopped overnight in my production server and when I try to start with:
systemctl start httpd.service
It does not start and I got this message:
Job failed. See system journal and 'systemctl status' for details.

When I run
systemctl status httpd.service
I got the following message:
httpd.service - The Apache HTTP Server (prefork MPM)
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/httpd.service; enabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Fri, 05 May 2017 09:04:43 +0100; 15min ago
Process: 1983 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -k start (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
CGroup: name=systemd:/system/httpd.service

With journalctl I got this message related to the attempt to start the httpd
systemd[1]: httpd.service: control process exited, code=exited status=1
systemd[1]: Unit httpd.service entered failed state.

I would appreciate very much if I could get help to solving this problem.

Thanks.

Re: HTTPD does not start

Are there any log messages from Apache?
Typically they are /var/log/httpd.

That's very old fashioned thinking.

Re: HTTPD does not start

Check /var/log/httpd/error_log and /var/log/httpd/access_log for more hints.

In the /etc/httpd/logs/error_log I get this:
[Fri May 05 15:54:36 2017] [notice] SELinux policy enabled; httpd running as context system_u:system_r:httpd_t:s0
[Fri May 05 15:54:36 2017] [notice] suEXEC mechanism enabled (wrapper: /usr/sbin/suexec)
[Fri May 05 15:54:36 2017] [notice] SSL FIPS mode disabled
[Fri May 05 15:54:36 2017] [warn] Init: Name-based SSL virtual hosts only work for clients with TLS server name indication support (RFC 4366)
[Fri May 05 15:54:36 2017] [warn] module ssl_module is already loaded, skipping
[Fri May 05 15:54:36 2017] [warn] module ssl_module is already loaded, skipping

In the /etc/httpd/logs/access_log I get this:
199.15.233.147 - - [05/May/2017:02:42:33 +0100] "GET /wp-login.php HTTP/1.1" 301 322 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/5.0)"
199.15.233.147 - - [05/May/2017:02:42:33 +0100] "GET //wp-login.php HTTP/1.1" 301 322 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/5.0)"

Yesterday (04/May/2017) at about 18:30h (British time) I did run the following script to renew a SSL certificate from COMODO:
cd /etc/pki/tls/private
[root@h79-143-83-18 private]# openssl req -nodes -newkey rsa:2048 -keyout intendedurl.key -out intendedurl.csr
Generating a 2048 bit RSA private key
I did submit the CSR to COMODO and waited for the cerficate to come.
At about 20:00h I did access of the websites in the same server without any problem, therefore Apache (HTTPD) was working well at that time.
This morning (05/May/2017) at about 5:00am (British time) I tried to access one of the websites in the same server is when I realised that I have a problem with HTTPD in the server.

The procedure of running a openssl script, I did the same think a year ago and had no problems whatsoever.

Is this HTTPD problem that I have related to the SSL cerificate?

Thanks for the help I can get in solving this problem.

Re: HTTPD does not start

Before trying to start, you can also run apachectl -t which will test the configuration for obvious syntax errors.

Also, as lightman said, see if there are httpd logs, especially the error log.

You can also try httpd -X for debug mode and see if that gives clues. Other things to check are SELinux (you can quickly temporarily stop it with setenforce 0 and turn it back on with setenforce 1)

Re: HTTPD does not start

The thread is marked solved. Did you solve it?

Was it with the help of something commercial? (Just wondering because I see the mods removed some link to a commercial product).

Re: HTTPD does not start

I did resolve the problem. I have realised that because I have generated a new private key and did not update in time the new SSL certificate, after about 8 hours Apache stopped.
Few hours after the update into the server of the new certificate, I managed to start the Apache.

Hope this information will help to prevent other members of this forum to have the same problem as I had.

Thanks.
