FC12: yum update then boot hangs// preload daemon

Have had a clean perfectly working copy of 2.6.31.6-166 for months and after two updates to 2.6.31.12-174.2.3 and 2.6.31.12-174.2.19, neither of the newer kernel versions will allow machine to boot properly. Start-up hangs at the preload daemon with a flickering screen. To use machine, must use grub chooser and choose the original base kernel.

Running on Tyan h2000m board, opteron 2356, Nvidia 9800 GTX+ and 12GB of dram with SELinux security enabled. TIA, V.

Most of the time when this kind of thing happens, it's the service after preload (or whichever is last displayed) that's hanging - does preload show an [OK] ?. Try to determine what that is by viewing the text boot sequence with the kernel that boots. Then look for problems (here, or at Bugzilla) with that service (or preload). Also: we now have a boot log, so you might check those (/var/log/boot.log*).

This happened to me with F11. In my case,it turned out that I needed to reinstall the NVIDIA video driver. I use the proprietary driver, and for some reason every once in a while after a yum update it gives me grief. I used a rescue disk, booted up, and than reinstalled the driver which I had sitting around.
