update from 16 to 17 gone wrong

Hello all: I have updated from 16 to 17 and many things do not work any more! devede, gnomemplayer vlcplayer. When I try to update the above I recieve a large string of missing/errors/dependencies. Here is the print out. Where do I start to resolve this issue/issues. Many thanks in advance.

[root@JohnsPc johnp]# yum install devede

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
I have used the --skip-broken idea to no avail. I will post the rest of the problem in my next posting, text length will not allow the whole error issue to be posted, sorry about that.

Re: update from 16 to 17 gone wrong

Upgrade = 'bad karma'. I did the same and learned that nothing beats (and saves work) like a clean install. Don't forget the backup prior. My upgrade performed kinda poorly for a while, then it got worse, then worse, and things started crashing. I wound up doing a ton of work to keep it running - only to wind up wiping it with a clean install. Works great now!

I know it wasn't what you wanted to hear ...

Re: update from 16 to 17 gone wrong

I've seen this happen before. I have a feeling I know what's going on, but I need confirmation from your system. (Hint: libMagickCore.so.4 is provided by ImageMagick-6.7.0.10-3.fc16, but the current version, ImageMagick-6.7.5.6-3.fc17 provides libMagickCore.so.5.) I need more information before attempting to give some suggestion.

Could you list here the versions for each package reporting the broken dependency, and the package it depends on?
For example, for avahi-ui, run in a terminal the following two commands:

rpm -q avahi
rpm -q avahi-ui

For those packages listing missing libraries (e.g. ' calibre-0.8.33-2.fc16.i686 has missing requires of libMagickCore.so.4'), you need to find out which package provides that library.

Re: update from 16 to 17 gone wrong

Also.. You stated you are upgrading to Fedora 17?

It is trying to install F18 packages. You have the rawhide repo enabled someplace. You need to disable rawhide and do a yum distrosync for F17.

Try running these commands (as root user)

Code:
yum clean all
rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__*
rpm --rebuilddb
yum --releasever=17 --disableplugin=presto distro-sync

Thanks to everyone that responded to my question. I did find I had accidentily checked the rawhide repo! DBelton your code worked like a charm. Could you explain just what the rm (remove) and the rpm line of code actually did. Once again thanks! John...

In your case the rm and rpm lines may not have been necessary, but it didn't hurt anything, either.

What they did was to delete and rebuild the rpm database on your system. Clear out the old junk and rebuild it with just what was on your system.

Now, just make sure you have the rawhide repos disabled or you will be constantly having issues. That includes all rawhide repos, fedora and rpmfusion.

Just to be on the safe side, I would look in every *.repo file in your /etc/yum.repos.d directory and make certain that any rawhide repo definition has the enabled line set to enabled=0
