Upgrade - FC16 to FC17

I upgraded my system (using FC17 dvd) from fedora 16 to fedora 17. But when I type the command

uname -a

in the terminal it says

Linux whiteunicorn 3.4.9-1.fc16.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Aug 15 20:45:23 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

why is it showing fc16 and not fc17.....????

Just a couple of quick possibilities. Did you select the new F17 kernel in grub when you booted? It SHOULD have selected that automatically but there's an off chance it didn't. Also, there's a chance it didn't upgrade the kernel. Try doing a yum upgrade and see if there are any packages it missed. You can also run "rpm -qa | grep kernel" and see which kernels you have installed. At least one should have fc17 in it.

I just put the cd in, then restarted my system. after that I got an option fresh install or upgrade...I selected upgrade...after that it asked for new settings for boot loader or no change...I selected no change....

this is what I found when entered the command rpm -ga | grep kernel

kernel-3.4.9-1.fc16.x86_64
libreport-plugin-kerneloops-2.0.10-3.fc17.x86_64
abrt-addon-kerneloops-2.0.10-3.fc17.x86_64
kernel-3.4.6-1.fc16.x86_64
kernel-3.4.7-1.fc16.x86_64


I think you are right. I need to upgrade my yum. let me try it out.

Just more evidence of why it's better to straight up upgrade using a live USB or CD

I ran the preupgrade script and had no issues at all. Actually even did it on several machines here at work without issue. I've never really bothered to try it using the CD or DVD.

I have never been able to ugrade manually and I don't think I have ever come across a script I had the same problem upgrading also so if you figure out a better way let me know and making a bootable usb is much better (faster) then cd or dvd

yum install preupgrade
preupgrade

Then just follow the prompts. It'll download everything and ask you to reboot. Reboot and choose the upgrade option in grub, it'll finish up and reboot into your new OS. Simple.

Well, I'll agree that any upgrade has its caveats, which is why most people recommend just doing a full-on re-install. You can actually keep your home folder intact even if you do a reinstall. I've personally never had any issues myself, but that doesn't mean it's a perfect process. Normally once you do a yum upgrade afterwards, you can pick up anything the preupgrade script might have missed.
