Problem installing amd legacy drivers

I'm having trouble installing the amd legacy drivers on my system. I am trying to install from amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.zip that I downloaded from the AMD site.

I have not recieved any errors during an installation other than once I start I get told that I am missing files needed to run the install. This is the message in the fglrx-install.log

"Check if system has the tools required for installation.
fglrx installation requires that the system have kernel headers. /lib/modules/3.3.4-5.fc17.x86_64/build/include/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system.
One or more tools required for installation cannot be found on the system. Install the required tools before installing the fglrx driver.
Optionally, run the installer with --force option to install without the tools.
Forcing install will disable AMD hardware acceleration and may make your system unstable. Not recommended."

When I type uname -r I get 3.3.4-5.fc17.x86_64. I'm at a total loss with this.
My graphics card is an AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4250
and my OS is Fedora 17

any help would be awesome

I installed the kernel-headers package and ran the install. After a so called successful install my computer boots into a backlit black screen. Everything is running because I can still access my shared files from other pcs in the house over my LAN network. Only fix I managed to find was to reinstall the OS.
