Unhappy fedora 9 issues - nVIDIA issues. Help please!

Hi everybody!!

I am fairly new to the whole linux/fedora realm and am starting to have a bit of a problem. I have installed linux on my laptop along with vista for a dual boot, that is working just fine. I recently tried downloading the drivers for nvidia. I also messed around with the compiz and emerald stuff in order to get the eye candy effect. When i believed all was well, when i booted again i couldnt load anything from the menus or panal at all. The screen would flash and nothing would appear on the screen.

I went to boot again, and as in brought me to a screen where it is loading the kernal and checking the system status and giving the okays on things. It said that nvidia cards disabled and warnings.
could someone advise me to how i would go about getting everything back to normal!!!

thanks for all your help, its greatly appreciated!!

When you are booting hit "A" on the Fedora bla bal screen. then select "E" to edit... backspace to erase RHGB quiet and replace that with the number 3. this will boot you to text mode. log in and then type system-config-display this will allow you to reset your video. if you still have a problem then cd / -- cd /etc/X11 then rm xorg.conf. this will delete your config file and you can then reboot and it will make a new one with default values....

good luck

Hello cloneu2, i greatly appreciate you taking the time to really help me out. thank you!

the problem in a sense still persists, although the windows are now visible there are still minor tweaks still taking place. i completed the whole system-config-display thing.....and that seemed to help a little. but when i tried the other in a terminal it said that no file exsists to remove.

also when i went to click on the hide all windows and show desktop in the left corner the message said "window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager." what does this mean?

your further help is greatly appreciated......

look at the file

root/etc/X11/xorg.conf

If you can copy it and paste it here. I run nvidia drivers that i DL from nvidia and install. Building my own kernel etc. They work fine. Here is my xorg.conf you will see that it is set up for Dual monitors.

Question Nvidia muck!!! beyond stuck!!!

at the start up of the kernel, where it is checking the status of the system and giving its okays on hardware and other factors..........i get a few messages regarding nvidia!!!!!

"check for module nvidia.ko" failed
"Nvidia.ko for kernel 2.6.25-14.fc9.i686 was not found" warning
"Nvidia driver will not be enabled until one is found" warning

sorry im new to the whole linux world and i was wondering how i would go about fixing this problem. already i have a problem with the display of open applications after the os has loaded and stated what that was in another post. i was wondering if this nvidia thing was my issue. i already tried looking on the nvidia site for a driver but i dont know how to go about doing that either if my nvidia geforce go 7150m is not an option.......

any help is appreciated!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

OK.. looks like you loaded the livna modules and not the one for your version of the kernel. Those messages are telling you that since the kernel module is not found that you are using the NV driver. This will work BUT you will not be able to use compiz or any effects. You need to install the driver from livna that is made for your kernel. You can still use your system just do not have 3D.
since you are new to linux you have a lot of reading to do.. This forum is a great place to start

Enjoy
