Fedora 11 dual-boot with Vista - moving to Windows 7

Hi guys,

I have a dual-boot machine, with Vista and Fedora 11, which is working great. I use GRUB as the boot manager, as Fedora was installed after Vista. So far, so good..

I'm going to get Windows 7 in a few days, but I bought the full installation, and not the upgrade (it's a different package), and so I'm wondering whether I can completely remove Vista and install 7, but without touching the existing Fedora installation.

I guess I'll have to reinstall GRUB after I install 7, but since I'm a Linux newbie, I'd like to know whether this is at all possible, or do I have to remove everything and start from scratch..

Thanks a bunch!
Fox

You shouldn't have to remove everything.

Do you boot the windows boot loader or fedora boot loader first? Is your 1st drive windows or linux?

If you boot the fedora boot loader you should be able to just re-install windoze. Then go back into fedora, use the install disk and chose the boot from hdd option, then reinstall the grub boot-loader. As long as you install windows 7 to the same drive/partition as Vista was you should be done, since your grub config will not have changed.

If you boot the windoze boot loader first, you will need to add the boot option for fedora to your new boot loader. I don't know anything about that, but I am sure google does.

Hi Stoggy,

I think my setup fits: I created two NTFS partitions for Vista to use (inst + data), and left some unpartitioned space for Fedora. I then installed Vista on the primary, and installed Fedora on the unpartitioned space. When I installed Fedora, I made GRUB my boot loader, not Vista's, so I guess I'll be able to keep my Fedora - cool!

Thanks for your help!
F.
