HPLIP does not detect usb printer after update

Hi,
I had done a fresh install of Fedora 25 with mate about a month back. All went well and I could use my usb-connected HP1020 plus after installing hplip. But after a dnf update last week, hplip stopped detecting the usb printer. lsusb shows the printer:
Code:
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 03f0:2b17 Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 1020
All the posts I found relate to printer not being detected from the begining, whereas I could use the printer for quite a while. Something happened during an update of fedora25.

Can anyone suggest where I should look for troubleshooting this problem

Thanks in advance

I think every time hplip receives a major update, you need to re-run hp-setup.
I know it happens to me.

Re: HPLIP does not detect usb printer after update

Again it is not detecting the printer. But this time when I started up hp-setup, a selinux alert popped up "avc denial". Could there be a permission clash with any file/folder?

Re: HPLIP does not detect usb printer after update

Still unable to use printer.
One update: hp-check command shows a warning:
Code:
Current contents of '~/.hplip/hplip.conf' file:
warning: Could not access file: No such file or directory
But the file hplip.conf is very much in the .hplip directory with r/w permission for all

Re: HPLIP does not detect usb printer after update

@twidlerjohn suggest temporarily disabling selinux via /etc/selinux/config if this is feasible, to see if this is the cause, can always re-enforce immediately afterwards.

ETA : overlooked kkshethin post 4 : setenforce 0 should have done this but have to wonder why there would be a selinux alert "avc denial" in that case ?
Suggest do as root :
sestatus
to check selinux is disabled.

@recjohnson are the following apps all present in the correct architecture on the system : hplip, hplip-common, hplip-libs ? 64bit also has hplip-gui.

Re: HPLIP does not detect usb printer after update

Thanks Jonor. hplip, hplip-common and hplip-libs are all present on system. I also have a hplip gui.
I tried disabling selinux, but no difference in behaviour.
I then tried this: tried installing the printer through cups (system>administration>print settings>add printer). I was able to add by copying the device url from the hplip.config file namely "hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1020?serial=S404LYD". and selecting the make and model as well as the driver shown on the menu. Printer added successfully, but test print failed with the print-queue message "not connected?"

After this, I found hplip does show the printer on the device manager page, but says "Device communication error code 5012"

Another observation:While rebooting fedora 25, I found several instances of the message
Code:
usb 1-2: device descriptor read/64, error -110
The printer was connected and switched on while booting Fedora. Coule it be a kernel related problem? The problem actually started after a kernel update about 10 days ago.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

Re: HPLIP does not detect usb printer after update

@ recjohnson can't help much beyond saying to investigate latest kernel related problems try booting from a lower kernel.
Press delete as system does Power-On Self-Test, should be presented with a screen offering at least two kernel choices and a rescue,
use arrow down to select lower kernel followed by return key to boot.
Also could try a different USB cable and USB socket on back of box in case it is an intermittent connection issue.

Re: HPLIP does not detect usb printer after update

Thanks for the suggestions. I am still at a loss. I tried various things and the following is a report:
1. swapped the USB cable and port with no difference in behaviour

2. The printer works on another machine with Ubuntu 14..04 with hplip

3. The printer works fine on the same machine (where i am having the problem) when I boot from a pendrive with ubuntu-mate 16.04.1.

4. I checked that HP1020 plus is fully supported in hplip.

5. I am able to add the printer through cups "system-config-printer". The printer utility shows 'unknown' device, 'A printer connected to a USB port'. After selecting the make, model and driver from menu, the printer is added successfully. But does not print test page. "journalctl -u cups -e" yields several error messages, the last of which are:
Code:
prnt/backend/hp.c 825: INFO: open device failed stat=12: hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1020?serial=S404LYD;

io/hpmud/musb.c 1151: unable to open hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1020?serial=S404LYD
6. Another thing I noticed was: if the printer is ON during fedora boot, there are several instances of
Code:
usb 1-2: device descriptor read/64, error -110
and
Code:
usb 1-2: device descriptor read/8, error -110
All the above observations pertain to the behaviour after today's dnf update which included kernel to 4.10.5

I appreciate any more suggestions to try. Hope to sort it out before trying a reinstal of fedora.

how about an error log?

Code:
su
dnf install rsyslog
systemctl list-unit-files | grep rsyslog
# should show as enabled
leave root terminal open for restart command below

I deviate from the wiki as I also like GUI

go to
http://localhost:631/admin

click on add printer
input root and root pw
do not click on continue
----instead click on admin

click on save debugging......extra steps to wiki I know but its GUI
click on save changes

Code:
systemctl restart cups.service
now restart cups and try to print and get the log....

go to http://localhost:631/admin
---if you can't see it you may have redo the root input thingee

copy and paste any relevant log snippets into a code box

good luck
