In fact, on openSUSE I only run KDE ...

Strange, I have been running openSUSE with GNOME and had zero problems, in fact I would go as far as to say GNOME is working better for me on openSUSE than on F18.

Gnome works good in almost every distro I 've tried.

Re: What distro are you trying right now?

I agree with boydrice. When gnome 3 first came out and OpenSUSE was one of the first to have it they have been maintaining the stability quite well.

OpenSUSE was nice it just doesn't feel right in the way that fedora does.

Good distro though.

Re: What distro are you trying right now?

ubuntu 12.04 32bit on another HDD for framebuffer application modification ATM,
i was using ubuntu 13.04 64bit with my own customization, but
for some technical reason, i need pure 32 bit env, so i tried it on vmware/virtualbox,
but it failed again, found out that graphic setting isn't real.
another solution is that PCI passthrough could be possible but complicated..
https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch...pcipassthrough

so had to install 32bit on another HDD.

PS: removed spyware-things, using cinnamon
anyway this HDD will be stored sooner of later.

Re: What distro are you trying right now?

Trying different distributions, do you find some have applications that you don't find in other distros, or not without compiling them yourselves?

For example, I like to include Pithos (Pandora radio player) & Pinta (Paint.NET-like image editor) and with each distribution I have to look up to see how to install them because the official repositories don't include them. Both of them include Ubuntu .deb files, or source.

OpenSUSE has the openSUSE Builds Service that helps though it gets confusing "which" one to use sometimes.

So, as you try different distributions, do you find any of them lacking some pre-configured applications, or do you pretty much use what is in the default and/or additional repositories?

I just found the openSUSE Build Service for Pithos includes a Fedora 17 & 18 version. But still, it takes a little looking around for each distribution to find (if any) to install.

For me, it is the simple little applications that are missing. Such as Dictionary 3.6.0, oddly missing in most all Linux distros accept for Fedora Gnome.

After testing different distros, post Debian 6, I found Fedora Gnome 3 a good fit. I focussed on the tasks performed for me by a linux distro, and have Fedora 18 down to a vanilla install with a few added applications from the default Fedora repos. I do add Adobe Flash player, but that is the only non-Fedora repo application I have on my system.

I am working on converting my CD music collection to ogg vorbis - have a good start I back my data up to a couple of home servers. Two months after the latest Fedora release: fresh install and I reload my data from the home servers - stable, up to date, easily maintained Linux distro

Re: What distro are you trying right now?

Tempted to try Ubuntu 13.04, but my usual laptop cannot handle it (PAE kernel issue) without jumping through additional hoops.

So for now it is running openSUSE 12.3 Xfce, though I am going to have to spend some time learning FreeBSD for work.
