R40 with ATI Mobility 7000 wont resume from suspend

Fedora 18 / Mate. All fully up to date.
Thinkpad R40 with newest BIOS.
ATI Mobility 7000 graphics.

Can not get the machine to resume from suspend. Sometimes blank screen, other times lines down screen. Can't switch to a terminal.

I tried xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-legacy but it did not work. X would not start.

I tried adding nomodeset to the boot parameters but again X would not start.

Any ideas on how to fix this? If I can't get this machine to suspend, is there any way to disable the option in MATE?

Thanks

Please check /var/log/pm-suspend.log after a failed resume.

Not sure what to make of this. It doesn't seem to log a resume at all...

Re: R40 with ATI Mobility 7000 wont resume from suspend

Any other suggestions / things to check?

Since I tend to get lines down the screen, I think X is the issue but not sure how to verify or what to do about it.

Re: R40 with ATI Mobility 7000 wont resume from suspend

You think the computer is running and this is just a graphics glitch?

Can you access or ping the computer from another machine in your local network?

If it was running and the HDD was accessible then it should be able to log some wakeup events like this:

Code:
/usr/lib64/pm-utils/sleep.d/99video suspend suspend: success.
Sat Dec 1 20:33:35 CET 2012: performing suspend
Sun Dec 2 08:32:07 CET 2012: Awake.
Sun Dec 2 08:32:07 CET 2012: Running hooks for resume
Running hook /usr/lib64/pm-utils/sleep.d/99video resume suspend:

Well.. no wake up events, but given the graphics corruption I suspect that is what is causing it to crash before logging anything!

Re: R40 with ATI Mobility 7000 wont resume from suspend

Disabled all bios power saving. Tried a few other random things in the bios including making sure its the latest version. No change. Going to grab an older fedora livecd and see if suspend works. Though even if it does, I am still not sure what component to file a bug against......So perplexed as to why it wont work on this old machine. These are just problems that we should not be having.

Re: R40 with ATI Mobility 7000 wont resume from suspend

Sorry for the continuous bumping, but I'd greatly appreciate some guidance - even just help to identify the offending component to file a bug report.

I figure it could be any of the following
x server
x ATI driver
kernel
systemd
or possibly even lightdm

Thoughts?

Re: R40 with ATI Mobility 7000 wont resume from suspend

A recent version of KNOPPIX has the same issue. Going to download an old version to see if this is a problem with my old hardware or a regression.

EDIT:
Fedora 15 livecd did the same thing.
Guess it is the hardware.
