[Errno 5] Input/output error: '//var/lib/yum/rpmdb-indexes/version.tmp'

Came to my computer this morning and something had happened over the night as it was put to "sleep" but required a power up to run. Then noticed several packages were not working properly (notably thunderbird).

Tried: sudo yum -y update

and received the following messages after a long list of packages to be updated:

first:

[Errno 5] Input/output error: '//var/lib/yum/rpmdb-indexes/conflicts.tmp'

then after a second attempt:

[Errno 5] Input/output error: '//var/lib/yum/rpmdb-indexes/version.tmp'

tried yum clean all
to no avail.

Help would be appreciated!

Disconnected ipod and rebooted and yum, thunderbird seems to be working normally.
