Hardware issues - Kernel panics

Having issues with the desktop at home. Had a problem a week ago, and saw ata errors (motherboard controller) in /var/log/messages. Replaced the ata controller and system was able to boot again. Now seeing ata errors again (PCIe card), along with eth2 (PCIe card).

Wondering if anyone can tell me anything about what's going on.

Sample from /var/log/messages:

Code:

Re: Hardware issues - Kernel panics

More information is needed, please post:

Kernel Version
$ uname -a

PCI/PCIe Devices and SATA Controller and kernel module in use
$ lspci -nnk

A complete dmesg, maybe.

In the thread title you mention 'panics', do these errors always lead to a kernel panic?

With so few information (and asuming both affected cards are pcie) , the only thing that
you might try is to boot without pci express active sate power management.
(kernel boot parameter pcie_aspm=off)

I've had the computer halt twice with kernel panics. First time it wouldn't boot again. I pulled the drives, saw the ata errors and installed the PCIe sata card, and booted from that. Second kernel panic/system crash was 22 hours ago, and found it in the morning when I woke up. After both, I had to fsck the root filesystem.

I will try booting with aspm off tomorrow when I have some more time.

Just hoping that it's not the motherboard, since it's old enough I'd have to replace the whole system. Can't really afford to do that at the moment.

Re: Hardware issues - Kernel panics

The problem seems to be ata2 /dev/sdf which, if I read the dmesg correctly is the Marvell controller with the Seagate (1TB?) drive. You have the seagate and two WD drives in some sort of md/RAID config.

DO replace the cable.
DO run 'smartctl' on that drive and look for problems.

You might try this as root
echo 1 > /sys/block/sdf/device/queue_depth
http://superuser.com/questions/28495...m-is-it-broken
or put in in a /etc/rc.d/rc.local

If that latter helps then look for drive firmware updates.
Think hard about your backup policy.

btw - smart to use the Intel enet instead for the Realtek

Re: Hardware issues - Kernel panics

I am having a close issue... it turns out that one of my disks is failing... luckly it was functional enough to make a back up of the data...

the errors seems awful close... I would back up any data if I where you...

If a drive starts to act up, I would seriously consider replacing it...
