Exhausted Overlay

I believe I have exhausted my persistent storage on my live-usb. I am unable to boot using the usb media. I am currently using a live-cd and I am trying to recover my lost data. I have seen the method described here: http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/LiveOS_...erlay_recovery .

However, when I attempt the code:
Code:
echo $'\x01' | dd of=run/media/liveuser/LIVE/LiveOS/overlay-LIVE-F8D3-5D42 bs=1 count=1 conv=notrunc
I see:
Code:
Read-only file system
Is there anything I can do using the live-cd, or is it too late to recover any data?

Thanks for the reply.

I suspect you had a typo (I've put in the correction in bold red) and there should have been a / 'slash' at the start of the start of the of filename
when I compare it to the example at that sugarlabs.org URL:
Quote:
echo $'\x01' | dd of=/path/to/overlay-file bs=1 count=1 seek=4 conv=notrunc
probably the problem is that the live overlay file is mounted as readonly from the live cd

Am I able to get around this? Is it possible to mount it as readwrite in livecd? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Exhausted Overlay

I thought you meant you were booting some kind of live rescue CD that wasn't going to do anything with the persistent file. In that case you can manually mount the overlay file any way you want to. That's what I'd try to do it. I don't use live CDs but I bet there's some kind of RAM only boot mode so the overlay is left alone

Re: Exhausted Overlay

Ok, so I tried to mount it using the following code:

Code:
mount /run/media/liveuser/LIVE/LiveOS/overlay-LIVE-F8D3-5D42 /mnt/LIVE
The result said:

Code:
mount: unknown filesystem type 'DM_snaphot_cow'
Is this the correct way to mount?

I have seen this, when I attempt the first line of code, it says that it is a read-only filesystem.

Re: Exhausted Overlay

Any ideas? Is there a more appropriate place for me to look for solutions?

Thanks.
