Angry Packages missing

I just installed Fedora 11 using a live CD and noticed I wasn't asked about the various packages to install like in previous versions I've installed on other computers. Is there a graphical interface for installing all the various packages? I can't remember everything I need and doing them individually would take forever if I could even remember everything. Looking online at the installation guide I see pictures of this right after the bootloader setup page but I never saw the next page. Mine just installed the bare bones. Rebooting with the CD doesn't give me any option to add packages. It only gives me the chance to start from scratch.

What can I do to get to this step or some other gui interface to accomplish what I need?

Code:
yum install <packagename>
from the command line.
Code:
yum install yumex.
Yumex is a graphical package installer. Once it is installed there will be a menu item for it. There is also Add / Remove Software somewhere in the default menu system.

This gives me the same error I get when trying to use the System->Administration->Add/Remove Software:

Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (respond.xml)for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again.

The only thing I find online is to look at the fedora.repo file. I see a suggestion to uncomment the baseurl instead of the mirrorlist but that does nothing for me. And yes I can access the internet via firefox.

Go to System->Administration->Software Sources and see what's checked.

I have decided I'm going to hold off installing F11 for a while...
I just rebuilt F10 from scratch because of a F11 upgrade gone bad.

I don't imagine it has any bearing but to be thorough the only thing I have changed is the modprobe.conf file since installation. I added three lines to the empty file.

alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off
alias eth0 r8169

to get my internet connection working. And I'm still unclear on why I had to do that for a fresh install. Is it possible that this is related in some way?

I just noticed 'gedit' is not happy either. I can open files but bet a huge list or repeated errors:

(gedit:2605): EggSMClient-WARNIG **: Failed to connect to the session ............

GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible cause are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or .............

I tried this as well:

http://digitizor.com/2009/06/17/how-...-in-fedora-11/

It changes the error message to:

http://download.fedoraproject.org/pu...ta/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error [Errno -3] Temporary failure in name resolution>
Trying other mirror.
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again

Taking those instructions one step further and also leaving in the mirrorlist line seems to work.

I still et errors but it eventually works:

# yum install yumex

Setting up Install Process
Resolving Dependencies
--> Running transaction check
---> Package yumex.noarch 0:2.0.5-6.fc11 set to be updated
--> Finished Dependency Resolution

Anyone know why I need to make these changes or why I still get some errors before it resolves itself?
