Increasing root partition

I have Fedora 12 installed on my laptop with Vista as alternate boot.
While installing F12, I chose to have my root partition with 4GB. Now I find that almost 99% of this space is used and only about 50 MiB remains free. So whenever I try to update F12 by issuing 'yum update' command it halts citing the error : Insufficient disk space in /.
Now, is it possible to increase the size of root partition to, say, 10 GB? Can I do this without disturbing other linux partitions like /home and the windows partitions?

Yes you can do it in a couple clicks with Gparted. Or you can issue 1000 obscure commands with Logcial Volume Management.

yum install gparted

If you want to install gparted in your existing installation. There is also a gparted liveCD available.

gparted does not support LVM yet. I am not expert but I know it is in general easier to grow than to shrink a Logical Volume. If your root partition is an LV, you can use system-config-lvm to grow the root partition then use resize2fs to resize the filesytem to match the increased partition size. That is if you still have spare space some where in your disk. The beauty of LVM is the LV partition can span to multiple physical volumes.

A little generic info may help, too. IF you left unused space in your lvm set up, it's trivial to enlarge root with the lvm gui. If you didn't, things are much more complicated. For starters, you'll need to answer all of SlowJet's question.
