Wink Browser Only OS

Hi all,

I have a requirement to setup fedora "kiosk", i just need the browser on it, no others GUI tools.

I've found some fedora kiosk version but the size is still to large.

I've tried the minimal installation added with firefox package, the result when i launch firefox is no display specified.

I've tried the XFCE desktop environment, but it is too much as well, there are still utilities and tools being setup.

Any suggestion what packages should i choose and/or remove in order to get very minimum graphic display with browser but without the utilites (GUI) configuration tools, online help, and others information tools?

Thanks before.

Re: Browser Only OS

What size do you need to get down to?

If you want to go really really small you could do this:

- Install from dvd. When prompted for type of install select minimal.

- Once the install is done, do the following (as root)

Code:
echo "group_package_types=mandatory" >> /etc/yum.conf
yum groupinstall base-x
yum groupinstall openbox
yum install redhat-menus
yum install dejavu-{fonts,sans,serif}*
yum install slim
yum install firefox
Then create a file called: /etc/sysconfig/desktop

and add the following:

Code:
DISPLAYMANAGER=slim
PREFERRED=openbox
Then type the following in a termnial
Code:
ln -sf /lib/systemd/system/graphical.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target
restart.

That should get you what you need. You may find you need a few more packages. If you search for minimal install on the forums there are a couple of posts by myself and sea that cover things in a bit more detail.

Re: Browser Only OS

Hi all,

In my imagination it should be only hundreds of MB, not GB.

For minimal installation, have tried that before. The weird thing was (i used Fedora 16), after the installation is finished, i did "yum grouplist" and it returns installed group list that i hadn't selected before, such as "Mail Server", "Network Servers", "Graphics" and so on.... and default size of minimal installation already more than 1GB...I dont know if it has something to do with the Fedora version. Anyway, i'll try your suggestion.

I'll give a shot for browserlinux, thanks all!

Have you thought about Fedora 16 LXDE? Roughly estimating, if you trimmed down F16 LXDE, I still think you would want around 600 MB of space, for a proper functioning OS.

Re: Browser Only OS

Hi Adunaic,

Finally i downloaded the slim package manually along with its dependencies.

But after i restart the GUI mode failed to start and default.target loading is error, because it is a directory. If i go to /etc/systemd/system/ there is no graphical.target file that was linked by default.target, but only graphical.target.wants directory...something i missed ?

Thanks before.

Sorry, my miss typo...it should be /lib for graphical.target..

Now it works perfectly...thanks all!
