nvidia and nouveau driver freeze system and keyboard input delayed

Hello fedora users,

I have a problem with my nvidia card. The system freezes from time to time and the input is laggy. I type in characters but they appear delayed some time.

It all began with the update to fedora 21. I have to use another gfx card driver now because the one from rpmfusion doesn't work anymore. I used to

Code:
yum install akmod-nvidia
But then I got a version which doesn't support my nvidia card anymore. It is a

Code:
[timo@fed ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT215 [GeForce GT 240] (rev a2)
Then I tried the nouveau driver. But it happened very often that the system was frozen. Had to do a hard reset.

I downloaded and installed the driver from Nvidia themself with their installer script.

Code:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.65.run
IIt worked in the first place and the bad thing is I have to run the script everytime the kernel is beeing updated. Which happens frequently on fedora.

I tried to go back to less gfx eye candy using the gnome classic environment and it seems to be a little better with that. But the delay of keystrokes is still present. Also the freezing is still there but much less frequent.

I am not very happy with this and I would not like to buy a different gfx card because of this. Does anybody know a solution?

Desperately
Timo

What kernel are you running. Since going to 3.17.6, I am seeing some freezing/glitchy display stuff too.
I am a radeon/ati guy. I am wondering if something is flakey with the kernel and not the grapics itself.

Hello mikee,

I am running the latest default kernel 3.17.6-300.fc21.x86_64.

Interesting to hear that it might not be nvidia specific.

Thank you and regards
Timo

I could be wrong. I am starting to wonder if it's a grapics card/hardware issue that just started
near the upgrade.... It's happens at POST too.

Re: nvidia and nouveau driver freeze system and keyboard input delayed

Fedora 20 with nvidia 331.104 works great, but Fedora 21 with 343.22 hangs the gnome-session. could be related to kernel and nvidia drivers, I tried kernel 3.16 with fedora 21 and nvidia 343.22 again failed. Must be the 343.22 drivers

Re: nvidia and nouveau driver freeze system and keyboard input delayed

I think it would be helpful to consolidate the numerous streams of data regarding the numerous problems users are experiencing with nouveau/nvidia/kernel 3.17, as there are at least half a dozen threads in this forum alone in the past couple weeks and several different bugs filed, none of which seem to acknowledge the others. Something (that started for me with the update to kernel 3.17*) has severely screwed up what was a perfectly good working system. (For me avoiding kernel 3.17 solves the issue completely). The relevant players seem to be kernel 3.17, nvidia cards, and the nouveau (and possibly also nvidia) drivers. On my machines with Radeon cards, kernel 3.17 presents no obvious issues. On my machine with the nvidia card, the nouveau driver is broken starting with kernel 3.17*.

The problem with the "delay" could be https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=728464 which affects gnome-shell when you use the proprietary driver.

Re: nvidia and nouveau driver freeze system and keyboard input delayed

As has been mentioned there are a lot of complaints about nvidia cards in F-21 so far. think there is something conflicting in the xorg-x11 -drv files.
In any event the partial solution for me is in this thread:

Thumbs up Re: nvidia and nouveau driver freeze system and keyboard input delayed

Hello,

I just had a distressing experience performing a Fedup upgrade 20 -> 21 with nvidia graphics.

The trick that I had to perform was to enabling the rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing repo because the versions were out of sync.

So now I appear to have F21/nvidia working but will see what happens upon the next yum update.

First I performed the following but akmod still refused to build upon boot:
Code:
$ sudo yum --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing install akmod-nvidia-304xx.x86_64
So next I installed the kmod:
Code:
$sudo yum install kmod-nvidia-304xx-3.17.7-300
Just to be clear as to what I have installed and my exact graphics card:
Code:
$ rpm -qa|grep nvidia
kmod-nvidia-304xx-3.17.7-300.fc21.x86_64-304.125-1.fc21.1.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-304xx-libs-304.125-1.fc21.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-304xx-304.125-1.fc21.x86_64
akmod-nvidia-304xx-304.125-1.fc21.1.x86_64
$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.17.7-300.fc21.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Dec 17 03:08:44 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ sudo lshw -class display
